These alkaloids are readily extracted with polar organic solvents (methanol, ethanol) under reflux or Soxhlet conditions, yielding extracts that display characteristic UV absorptions (λmax ≈ 260–290 nm) and mass spectra dominated by protonated molecular ions at m/z 300–650 Da. The presence of a free phenolic hydroxyl in several members imparts moderate water solubility after basification, facilitating subsequent acid‑base partitioning.
The structural diversity and typical NMR signatures of these bisbenzylisoquinolines make S. delavayi a useful reference source for natural‑product chemists. Isolated compounds are employed as analytical standards for dereplication in metabolomic studies, for the calibration of HPLC‑UV and LC‑MS methods targeting isoquinoline alkaloids, and as authentic samples in the development of new synthetic routes to bisbenzylisoquinoline scaffolds.
