Traditional medicinal practices across parts of Southeast Asia and southern China record infusions and decoctions of the aboveground stems and leaves of Fibraurea recisa as remedies for digestive discomfort, respiratory complaints, and as gentle fever reducers. In Vietnam’s Quang Tri and Thua Thien–Hue provinces, a warm decoction prepared from sliced stems is commonly taken to “clear heat” and settle upset stomachs (Malesky et al., 2019). In the Nakai district of northern Thailand, communities decoct aerial parts as a cough tea, while in northern Vietnam’s Lao Cai, a fresh poultice of crushed stem and leaf is applied to minor sprains and bruises (Le et al., 2016). In southern China’s Yunnan province, leaf and stem infusions are used as a gentle febrifuge, with some informants noting it as a tonic drink (Li et al., 2014).

In practice, a mild digestive tea can be prepared from sliced stems. Place 10–20 g of fresh stem or 5–10 g of dried stem in 500 mL of cold water, bring to a gentle boil, simmer 15 minutes, and steep covered for an additional 10–15 minutes. Strain and drink 200–250 mL, warm, 1–2 times daily. Use the same proportions for a respiratory decoction, straining before a brief final steep to preserve aromatic notes. A fresh poultice can be made by crushing 30–50 g of clean stem and leaf, warming briefly (about 1–2 minutes in a pan), applying to the skin, and covering with a clean cloth for 30–60 minutes, twice daily. Reported active constituents include isoquinoline alkaloids such as berberine and related protoberberines (Zhao et al., 2012; Nguyen et al., 2017), along with notable essential-oil terpenes such as curzerene and curzerenone (Tung et al., 2016), which align with the traditional applications to fever, cough, and inflammatory discomfort.

Today, Fibraurea recisa is featured in small-scale teas and herbal blends sold locally in northern Vietnam and southern China, while academic interest in its isoquinoline alkaloids continues, especially in relation to gastrointestinal and respiratory pharmacology.
