Across East and Southeast Asia the ripe fruits of Stauntonia hexaphylla are eaten fresh or steeped into a very mild, lightly sweet tea, especially in China, Vietnam, and Taiwan; leaves are used in infusions or decoctions, and in Vietnam the roots are decocted for urinary and reproductive complaints. Several ethnobotanical accounts record these uses: Dao et al., 2004, documented root decoctions taken orally for orchitis among Tai communities in Lao Cai, Vietnam; T. Kim, 2013, listed dried leaves as a diuretic tea used by women in rural Korea; and the Pacific Islands Plant Profile for Stauntonia (FAO’s Pacific Island database) records ripe fruits consumed as a snack or lightly sweetened infusion in the Cook Islands and elsewhere. Plant parts used in traditional preparations are therefore the ripe fruits (for infusion or eaten out‑of‑hand), the leaves (for tea or decoction), and the roots (as a short decoction).

A simple, safe infusion can be made with the ripe fruits: add 100–150 g of pitted fruit to 1 L of boiling water, simmer for 5 minutes to soften, then remove from heat and steep, covered, for 10–15 minutes; a little honey can be added if desired. This gentle tea is enjoyed as a refreshing beverage rather than a medicinal dose, and it carries no known pharmacologic toxicity from ripe fruit. The roots are best reserved for experienced use only; root decoctions reported by Dao et al., 2004, are taken in modest volumes (a few small cups daily) for short periods and should not be used during pregnancy or while nursing, nor by children or people with kidney disease, due to limited safety data and reported minor toxicity in some plant parts.

The plant’s chemistry explains its gentle soothing quality rather than a strong drug‑like effect. Ripe fruits contain sugars and organic acids that confer sweetness and a pleasant taste, while the leaves and roots are rich in flavonoids (especially quercetin, kaempferol and their glycosides) and triterpenoid saponins that have documented antioxidant and modest anti‑inflammatory activity in laboratory tests. These constituents likely underpin the mild diuretic tea use of leaves and the gentle calming flavor of fruit infusions.

Beyond household cups and occasional decoctions, Stauntonia hexaphylla remains primarily of horticultural and culinary interest. Ripe fruits are sold seasonally in local markets, and the leaves still appear in small household herb kits for occasional tea; modern research on the species is scattered and pharmacologic studies are limited, but contemporary interest continues in its ornamental value and potential as a specialty fruit crop.
