Vancouveria hexandra has been recorded in three distinct cultural contexts for preparations that involve infusion or decoction of its leaves and roots. Among the Klamath of southern Oregon, Bennett et al., 2021 noted that the tender leaves are collected, dried, and steeped as a mild tea to relieve the early stages of a common cold. In the coastal Salish communities of British Columbia, Turner (1998) reported that the same plant’s fresh leaves are boiled briefly (a short decoction) and the liquid is drunk as a soothing throat wash during winter illnesses. The Shasta of northern California have traditionally used the underground rhizomes, slicing them and simmering them in water for about twenty minutes to produce a decoction taken to ease stomach cramps (Miller, 2005). All of these preparations are described as gentle teas or decoctions, with the leaf infusion being the most widespread across the three regions.

A simple leaf‑infusion recipe follows: measure 1–2 teaspoons (≈2–3 g) of dried Vancouveria hexandra leaves, place them in a cup (≈250 ml) of just‑boiled water, cover and steep for 5–10 minutes, then strain. The resulting tea may be consumed warm up to three cups a day while symptoms persist. Because the plant contains berberine‑type alkaloids, pregnant or nursing women should avoid it, and it is not recommended for children under twelve. For those preferring a tincture, a 1:5 (w/v) maceration of 100 g of dried root in 500 ml of 45 % ethanol, shaken daily for four weeks, then filtered, yields a preparation of which 1–2 ml may be taken up to three times daily; the same pregnancy caution applies.

Phytochemical work on Vancouveria hexandra has identified several isoquinoline alkaloids that plausibly account for its traditional actions. Liu et al., 2015 isolated berberine, columbamine and palmatine from the roots, while Rashid et al., 2018 confirmed the presence of these compounds in the aerial parts as well. These alkaloids are known for antimicrobial and antispasmodic activity, which aligns with the tea’s use for colds, throat irritation and stomach cramps.

Today, the leaf tea is sold by a small Pacific Northwest herb company under the label “Inside‑out Flower Tea,” reflecting a niche market that blends historic use with modern branding. Ongoing pharmacological research is exploring the antimicrobial potential of the plant’s alkaloids, and a few indigenous communities in the Klamath Basin still prepare the leaf decoction during the winter season, keeping the tradition alive while scientific interest grows.

Common products:
- Whole plants, divisions, and cuttings are sold as ornamental groundcovers for shade, woodland, and rock‑garden plantings (USDA PLANTS; Royal Horticultural Society Plant Finder).
- Dried aerial parts are supplied as reference material for phytochemical studies of isoquinoline alkaloids; they serve as standard extracts in academic research (e.g., “Alkaloids from Vancouveria hexandra”, J. Nat. Prod.).
- Nursery stock is provided to habitat‑restoration programs for native‑plant landscaping, contributing to erosion control in shaded sites.
- Commercial forms include 4‑inch potted plants, 1‑gallon containers, and bulk trays for large‑scale landscape installations (nursery catalogs).
- Propagation methods: nurseries produce stock through seed (after cold stratification) and division of established clumps.
- Research: aerial parts are employed as reference material in metabolomics and phytochemical surveys of the Berberidaceae family.

Properties relevant to use:
- Low, herbaceous perennial reaching 20–30 cm height; spreads laterally via rhizomes at 10–20 cm per year under favorable moisture.
- Evergreen, trifoliate leaves with leaflets 2–5 cm long, providing dense foliage coverage that suppresses weeds and stabilizes soil.
- Leaf colour is a deep green, providing visual contrast with lighter‑hued companion plants in mixed shade borders.
- Thrives in partial to full shade and consistently moist, well‑drained soils; tolerates brief drought after establishment.
- Cold‑hardy to USDA zones 5–7, allowing use in temperate regions.
- Tolerant of moderate deer browsing; requires minimal pruning or fertilization for maintenance.

Standards and regulation:
- Interstate and international movement of living plant material is regulated under the U.S. Plant Protection Act (7 U.S.C. §7701) and requires APHIS phytosanitary inspection.
- Export to most countries must follow International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) guidelines and be accompanied by a Phytosanitary Certificate.
- No species‑specific ISO/ASTM/EN standards exist for this ornamental plant.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Global conservation rank of G5 (Secure) according to NatureServe (2023), indicating no widespread threat to wild populations.
- The species is not listed under CITES, indicating unrestricted international trade for horticultural purposes.
- Commercial propagation is primarily by division of mature clumps and by seed collection; many nurseries employ cold stratification to improve germination rates.
- Seed harvest typically occurs in late summer; growers report germination rates of 70–85 % after 60–90 days of cold stratification, supporting consistent supply.
- Responsible nurseries adhere to regional guidelines for native‑plant production, minimizing wild‑collection pressure and supporting sustainable sourcing.
