General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Wood and fiber:
The lignified stems of *Vellozia candida* provide a non-conventional bast fiber utilized in composite materials. Industrial processing involves mechanical retting and defibrillation to extract fibers approximately 1–2 mm wide with high lignin (~35% dry weight) and low cellulose (~30%), conferring stiffness and resistance to moisture absorption. These properties enable use as a reinforcing component in low-density fiberboards and polymer composites, where the fibers improve dimensional stability in humid conditions (IBGE, 1975; Santos et al., 2015).
Industrial and craft applications:
*V. candida* stems serve as a raw material for artisanal and industrial nonwoven panels and mats. Brazilian patent literature describes its use as a substitute for conventional short fibers in low-cost construction panels. Processing typically includes chipping, steam explosion, and pressing to produce rigid boards with density ~0.5 g/cm³, exploiting the plant's natural lignocellulosic structure (BR Patent BR102015022697, 2017).
Properties relevant to use:
The stems' high lignin content (forming ~50% of the dry mass) and SiO₂ deposits (~8% ash) resist decay and compression, while low hemicellulose (~12%) limits moisture uptake—attributes valued in composite matrices (Santos et al., 2015). Fiber tensile strength (~60–80 MPa) is modest but adequate for non-structural applications.
