Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, leaves are infused as a tea to aid coughs and bronchial irritation (Bennett et al., 2021). In the Pacific Northwest, the Okanagan‑Colville prepare a root infusion to “break a cold” and soothe fevers (Bourke, 2014). On the Canadian Prairies and in eastern North America, early botanists noted that Indigenous practitioners made tea from Oenothera biennis leaves and roots to relieve diarrhea, dysentery, and “stomach complaints,” often as decoctions for stronger effect (Moerman, 1998; Moerman et al., 2012; Fernald et al., 1958). The plants’ mucilaginous, slightly bitter infusions were prized as gentle astringents and to stimulate sweating.

A simple root decoction that people have described in these traditions uses roughly 1 ounce (≈ 28 g) of dried root simmered in 3 cups (≈ 720 ml) of water until reduced by a third, about 20–25 minutes; strained and drunk warm in 1/2‑cup portions 2–3 times daily for mild digestive upset. If an alcohol tincture is preferred, many herbalists follow a 1:5 ratio with 45% alcohol, macerating for 4–6 weeks, shaking daily, and taking 20–40 drops 2–3 times daily as directed. Because evening primrose can interact with some medications (including anticoagulants and epilepsy drugs), and because preparations may provoke allergic reactions in those sensitive to the plant family, pregnant or nursing people are generally advised to avoid internal use (U.S. National Library of Medicine, 2022; MedlinePlus, 2023).

The activity of Oenothera biennis is closely linked to the seed oil’s abundant gamma‑linolenic acid and the leaf’s flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, as well as phenolic acids like caffeic and ferulic acids. These constituents support the plant’s traditional astringent and anti‑inflammatory reputation (E. R., 1958; Moerman, 1998).

Modern relevance: evening primrose seed oil is widely available as a dietary supplement, while leaf‑based infusions remain in use by herbal communities that seek the plant’s traditional astringent and mildly diaphoretic actions (U.S. National Library of Medicine, 2022; MedlinePlus, 2023).

Common products:
Evening‑primrose oil (Oenothera biennis oil) is marketed as a bulk commodity for cosmetic manufacturers and as a food‑grade ingredient. The oil is produced by cold‑pressing or solvent extraction from the seeds.

Industrial and craft applications:
The oil is used as a base oil in soap and personal‑care formulations, contributing moisturising properties to finished products. It also serves as a feedstock for biodiesel; studies report successful transesterification of the oil to meet EN 14214 (EU) or ASTM D6751 (US) specifications.

Food and beverages (non‑medicinal):
Evening‑primrose oil is incorporated as an edible oil in functional foods such as nutrition bars, salad dressings and snack products. It is marketed for its fatty‑acid profile rather than any culinary performance, and may appear as a minor component in specialty food formulations.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Registered under the INCI name Oenothera biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil, it functions as an emollient and carrier oil in creams, lotions, serums and other cosmetic preparations. Flower extracts may be employed as fragrance components in perfumery.

Properties relevant to use:
The oil contains approximately 70 % linoleic acid and 9–10 % gamma‑linolenic acid (GLA) of total fatty acids, with small amounts of oleic, palmitic and stearic acids. Its iodine value is about 120–135 g I₂/100 g, saponification value 185–195 mg KOH/g, and acid value typically below 2 mg KOH/g. The high polyunsaturated fatty‑acid content provides emollient and film‑forming properties, while the moderate oxidative stability often necessitates antioxidant addition.

Standards and regulation:
The INCI‑listed ingredient is regulated under EU Cosmetic Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. When marketed as a food, it must comply with EU Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 and ISO 659 (determination of oil content in oilseeds). Fatty‑acid composition is determined according to ISO 12966. Biodiesel derived from the oil must satisfy EN 14214 or ASTM D6751.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Evening primrose is cultivated as an annual herb in North America, Europe and New Zealand, yielding 1.5–2.5 t ha⁻¹ of seed. The crop tolerates marginal soils and requires relatively low inputs; seed residues can be used as animal feed or composted. Oil is extracted by cold‑press (retaining higher GLA) or solvent processes.

Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment.
Requires Light or Surface Sowing: These seeds need light to germinate and should not be covered with soil or only very lightly. They are often very small and sown directly on the surface of the growing medium.
