Aquilaria malaccensis, the tree that yields the prized agarwood, has a long history of medicinal use in Southeast Asia. In traditional Chinese medicine, the resin is boiled as a decoction to treat cough, asthma, and fever, and it is also used to calm the mind during meditation (Li et al., 2018). Thai healers prepare a fragrant tea by macerating dried agarwood in hot water; the infusion is taken for respiratory ailments, as a mild sedative, and to relieve muscle tension (Phongphit et al., 2015). Indonesian practitioners brew a decoction of the resin to reduce joint pain and inflammation, especially in the knees and shoulders, and sometimes combine it with ginger or turmeric for added benefit (R. M. et al., 2017). In all three cultures, the resin or dried wood is the primary part used, often in combination with other herbs in poultices for skin conditions such as eczema or minor burns.

A simple mild tea: take 1 gram of dried agarwood resin, place it in a small cup, and pour 200 milliliters of hot water (not boiling). Let it steep for 10 minutes, then strain. Drink one cup in the morning and one in the evening for best effect. This preparation yields a gentle aroma and mild therapeutic benefit. Safety note: the resin contains compounds that may stimulate uterine contractions; pregnant women should avoid this tea, and individuals with liver disease should use it sparingly.

The therapeutic effects of agarwood are largely attributed to sesquiterpenes such as agarospirol, agarol, and other related compounds that have been isolated from the resin. These molecules have shown anti‑inflammatory, antimicrobial, and bronchodilatory activity in laboratory studies, supporting the traditional use for cough and fever.

Today, agarwood is harvested for high‑value fragrance and incense, and its resin is also used in perfumery and aromatherapy. Sustainable cultivation projects in Malaysia and Indonesia grow Aquilaria malaccensis under controlled conditions to induce resin formation. Research is testing agarwood extracts against bacteria such as *Staphylococcus aureus* and *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*, and exploring its anti‑inflammatory potential. The traditional uses of Aquilaria malaccensis continue to inform modern pharmacology, keeping the plant relevant for both cultural heritage and contemporary wellness.

Common products:
The primary commercial product from Aquilaria malaccensis is agarwood (also called eaglewood or oudh), formed when trees become infected and produce a resin-impregnated heartwood. The material is traded as raw chips, blocks, and powders, as a source of essential oil and oleoresin, and as a fragrance ingredient. Non-wood parts of the tree are not a primary source of commercial products.

Industrial and craft applications:
Agarwood is primarily used as a fragrance material; it may be processed by hydrodistillation, steam distillation, solvent extraction, or supercritical CO2 to produce essential oil and resinoid used in perfumery and incense. Commercial formats include fractionated or “golden” oils, absolute, and resinoid. The term “agarwood oil” refers to distilled oil; “agar oil” is used in some regions to describe the same product. The material also enters the incense and incense-stick (agarbatti) markets as chips, dust, and powder. There are no well-established non-fragrance industrial uses of A. malaccensis wood in the published sources reviewed.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Agarwood oil, resinoid, and absolute are used in fine fragrances and niche perfumery as a precious fixative and base-note ingredient. The material is also employed in incense and aromatherapy contexts for its aromatic qualities. Depending on application, the product is sold as crude oil, fractionated oil, absolute, or resinoid. Regulatory notes: where marketed as a fragrance ingredient, compliance with the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) Code of Practice is standard, and in the EU and USA fragrance allergens in Annex III to Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 and the IFRA Standards apply to cosmetic products containing fragrance materials; agarwood components may be covered by these frameworks.

Properties relevant to use:
The odor profile derives from a complex mixture dominated by sesquiterpenes (e.g., sesquiterpene alcohols and hydrocarbons such as α-guaiene and δ-guaiene) with oxidation and cyclization products (e.g., guaiol, bulnesol, selinenes) and phenolic aromatics (e.g., vanillin). Oleoresin content and the extent of infection drive yield and fragrance intensity. Density of resin-rich heartwood facilitates chip and powder sizing for incense applications. Properties enabling use are primarily odorants and fixative behavior, not mechanical strength or durability.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Wild and plantation sources coexist; species-level certification and traceability are in development to support sustainable supply. Trade is regulated: A. malaccensis is listed in CITES Appendix II for international trade, which requires export and re-export permits, and in the EU the import/export of specimens is subject to CITES controls. Major markets include India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates; industry practice typically relies on chain-of-custody documentation aligned with CITES and national timber/plant product regulations.
