General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
The ripe fruit is consumed fresh and used to prepare jams, jellies and juices in northern Amazonia. Seeds yield an edible oil used for cooking and soap making. The heartwood is used for general carpentry and small wooden implements.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
The mesocarp is eaten fresh; fruits are processed into jams, jellies and syrups or pressed into juices for local markets and home use. Seed oil is used as an edible oil; its relatively high oleic acid content supports shelf stability and high-heat applications such as frying and sautéing.
Wood and fiber:
Heartwood is used in local carpentry, fence posts, tool handles and small construction elements; sapwood is susceptible to insect attack. The trunk may provide fuelwood and charcoal.
Properties relevant to use:
The seed oil is characterized by high levels of oleic acid (commonly above 70% in related Parinari species), conferring oxidative stability suitable for food use. Its fatty-acid profile (moderate linoleic and stearic content) and saponification value (~188 mg KOH/g) also support soap making. The wood is described as hard and resistant in service.
Standards and regulation:
Food use of the fruit and seed oil follows national food regulations in Brazil and neighboring countries; fruit products marketed in the Amazon region are subject to local sanitary and labeling requirements.
Sustainability and sourcing:
Fruits and seeds are collected from natural populations in terra firme and white-sand forests in the Guianas and northern Amazon Basin. Sustainable harvesting that favors mature fruits and avoids seed depletion is recommended to maintain regeneration; overharvest of fruits may reduce recruitment.
