Paris polyphylla, known in traditional Chinese medicine as “Bai He,” is chiefly used for its root. In China, the root is boiled as a decoction or steeped as an infusion to treat fever, pain, and inflammation (Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2020). Korean practitioners prepare a tincture of the root for chronic pain and to strengthen the spleen and stomach (Korean Pharmacopoeia 2015). In Japan, a poultice made from powdered root is applied to bruises and fractures to reduce swelling and promote healing (Japanese Pharmacopoeia 2019). All three traditions emphasize the root, rarely using leaves or stems, and rely on water‑based preparations or alcohol extraction.
A simple decoction can be made at home: take 10 g of dried, sliced root and add it to 200 ml of boiling water. Simmer gently for 30 minutes, then strain the liquid. Drink one to two cups of the decoction daily, preferably in the morning. Because Paris polyphylla contains potent steroidal saponins, it is toxic if taken in excess; limit the dose to no more than 5 g of root per day, avoid use during pregnancy, and consult a qualified practitioner before long‑term use.
The pharmacological activity of Paris polyphylla is largely attributed to its steroidal saponins, especially polyphyllin I, II, and III, as well as other alkaloids such as peimisine. These compounds have been shown to inhibit inflammatory mediators, induce apoptosis in cancer cells, and modulate pain pathways, providing a biochemical basis for the plant’s traditional analgesic and anti‑inflammatory claims.
Recent studies continue to explore Paris polyphylla’s anti‑cancer potential, and the herb remains commercially available in East Asian pharmacies and online TCM shops. Its enduring use in Chinese, Korean, and Japanese medicine underscores its cultural importance and the need for careful, informed application.
