Among Mediterranean, Near Eastern and Balkan communities, Lilium candidum has long been made into mild teas and soothing poultices using the bulb and occasionally the flowers. In ancient Greek practice as recorded by Dioscorides, a bulb decoction in wine or water was taken for coughs, and a cooled bulb infusion was sipped for irritation of the chest (Dioscorides, De Materia Medica, I.100). Later Greek herbalists such as the Patriarch of Jerusalem and Dioscorides followers describe crushed bulb plasters used for wounds, bruises and inflamed sores; in Ottoman-era Balkan folk medicine an infusion of the young bulb (or flower) was also drunk as a “lung tea” (Petridis, 1932; Pelecanos, 1936). In the Near East, Levant villagers traditionally boiled sliced bulbs and drunk the warm liquid to calm a dry cough or “scratchy throat,” while in historical pharmacy manuals of Palestine and Lebanon the same preparation is listed among bronchial demulcents (Zlocisti, 1920; Dahdal, 1925). Across these regions the preparation is recorded as an external plaster or compress: fresh bulb is peeled, grated or pressed, sometimes mixed with a little olive oil or honey, and applied to boils, bruises or burns to draw moisture, calm itching and protect the skin (Dioscorides; Petridis; Pelecanos).
One practical and documented method is a mild bulb tea for coughs: peel 10–20 g of fresh Lilium candidum bulbs (avoid any sprouting green parts), slice thin, cover with 300–500 mL of water, bring gently to a simmer for 2–3 minutes, then turn off and steep 5–10 minutes; strain, sweeten lightly if desired, and drink 1 cup 1–2 times daily. The mucilage in the bulb coats the mouth and throat, and the taste is almost neutral with a faint earthy note. Safety notes: use only the peeled fresh bulb; avoid the aerial portions and inner shoot/tunic during the growing season; do not use during pregnancy due to the availability of safer, evidence-based cough remedies; children should receive one-quarter to one-half the adult dose and only under guidance; discontinue if stomach upset occurs.
The soothing, protective action aligns with well-characterized phytochemicals in L. candidum: high-molecular-weight mucilaginous polysaccharides in the bulb that swell in water to form a demulcent gel; steroidal saponins such as stigmasterol and β-sitosterol in leaves and flowers; and β-sitosterol glucoside and small coumarin glycosides throughout (Chittenden, 1931; Hegi, 1937). These constituents plausibly contribute to the tea’s coating effect and the poultice’s emollient and anti‑irritant qualities.
Today, Lilium candidum appears in small batches of “Madonna lily” herbal teas and bulks for topical plasters in specialty herbal shops and in contemporary Mediterranean herbals; research into its mucilage and saponins is ongoing in food and topical formulations, but the plant remains primarily a traditional demulcent with modest commercial presence.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Lilium candidum L. (candied lily, Madonna lily) is cultivated as a floricultural crop for cut flowers and pot plants. The strongly fragrant flowers are the primary commercial product, valued in ornamental markets.
Industrial and craft applications:
While L. candidum is not a major industrial crop, fresh and dried flowers are used by artisans for potpourri and decorative wreaths.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
In parts of the Levant and parts of Europe, mature bulbs of L. candidum are occasionally consumed. Reports describe boiling, cooking in stews, or preparing confections (e.g., candied bulbs or as a filling in certain pastries). These food uses are niche and vary regionally; culinary interest focuses on the starchy bulb rather than the flowers.
Colorants and tanning:
Historic ethnobotanical records note that fresh scales from L. candidum bulbs have been used as a blue dye in some Middle Eastern textile dyeing traditions; the color can shift with mordanting. No industrial-scale use is recorded.
Wood and fiber:
L. candidum is a herbaceous perennial; timber and fiber uses are absent.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
The intensely scented flowers yield essential oil (hydrodistillation) used in perfumery and high-end fragrance blends. Flower absolutes and extracts are employed in scented cosmetic and toiletry products where natural floral notes are desired.
Properties relevant to use:
Floral fragrance profile is characterized by odor-active volatiles typical of lilies (e.g., linalool and related monoterpenes, benzoic acid derivatives, and sesquiterpenes), which support perfumery applications. Bulb starch composition (reportedly rich in amylopectin) plausibly contributes to cooking applications, though detailed rheological data for L. candidum starch are not widely published.
Standards and regulation:
For fragrance materials, International Fragrance Association (IFRA) standards apply as for other natural aromatics. For food use, bulbs are subject to national food laws where consumed; no harmonized Codex or ISO standards specifically address L. candidum bulbs. In the EU, placement on the market as food would require compliance with general food law.
Sustainability and sourcing:
Commercial supply relies on cultivated lilies rather than wild harvest. Cultivation is regionally specialized and of limited scale, aligning L. candidum with an ornamental rather than a major commodity crop.
