Fritillaria meleagris, also known as snake's head fritillary, is a Eurasian flowering plant in the lily family. It is a bulbous perennial that grows in abundance in the flood river plains of Europe. The plant has several common names, including chess flower, frog-cup, guinea-hen flower, and leper lily. Its Latin name, meleagris, means "spotted like a guineafowl" and its nodding flower heads have a snakelike appearance. The flower has a chequered pattern in shades of purple or white and blooms from March to May. It is typically found in grasslands and damp soils at altitudes up to 800 meters. While it is native to Europe and western Asia, it is now considered an endangered species in many areas and is commonly grown in gardens. In the United Kingdom, there is debate over whether it is a native species or a garden escapee. It was once abundant in the UK, but its habitat was destroyed during World War
