Hernandia nymphaeifolia, also known as the lantern tree, is a species of plant in the Hernandiaceae family. It is a tree that can reach heights of 5-22 meters and has ovate or subcircular leaves with palmate veins. The flowers are white or greenish and have a fragrant odor, with separate male and female parts. The fruit is fleshy and can be red or white in color. This species is found in coastal areas throughout the tropics, particularly in littoral forests and coastal swamps. It is commonly used for various purposes, such as fishing rods, furniture, and firewood. In some cultures, the seeds are polished and made into necklaces, and the leaves are used for medicinal purposes. The wood of the lantern tree is also used to make canoe hulls and hourglass drums in certain regions. Its flowers have been used to treat asthma in Fiji.
