Ocimum gratissimum, also known as clove basil, African basil, wild basil, and many other local names, is a species of basil native to Africa, Madagascar, southern Asia, and the Bismarck Archipelago. It is used as a culinary herb in West Africa and the Caribbean, and has potential for use as a food preservative due to its essential oil containing eugenol, which has antibacterial activity. It is also a useful insect repellent, as it repels the thrips Thrips tabaci. The phytochemicals present in O. gratissimum contain polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, and terpenoids.
