Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, Bennett et al., 2021 report that Millingtonia hortensis is prepared as a mild infusion from the leaves for headache and fever. Across mainland Southeast Asia, Burkill’s “Dictionary of Economic Products of the Malay Peninsula” describes a bark decoction taken for coughs, bronchial complaints, and colic. In Myanmar, the roots are traditionally mashed into a poultice and applied to wounds and skin infections, as recorded by Anderson in “Ethnobotany of Thailand.” In parts of India and Thailand, a bark decoction is taken as an expectorant for colds and wheeze. These preparations consistently involve two parts: the leaves in infusion and the bark in decoction, with root paste used topically.
A simple, practice-focused recipe for a cough-bark decoction uses about 10 g of dried, finely chopped bark simmered in 500 ml of water for 20–30 minutes, then strained and taken warm in small doses for several days. This method is consistent with traditional practice as summarized by Burkill and widely used in Southeast Asia. Safety note: although not strong or poisonous, this bark is very bitter and can irritate the stomach; avoid large single doses, do not use while pregnant or breastfeeding, and do not give to young children unless advised by a qualified practitioner.
Active constituents that are repeatedly reported for this species and that plausibly contribute to the respiratory and skin uses include flavonoids such as quercetin and luteolin glycosides, triterpenoids like ursolic and oleanolic acids, simple coumarins, saponins, and phenolic acids. These compounds have documented anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and mild expectorant properties in other plant systems and therefore align with the traditional applications of bark decoctions and root poultices.
Modern relevance: ongoing research is exploring Millingtonia hortensis extracts for antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and respiratory effects, and the plant continues to be available in traditional markets across Southeast Asia in dried bark and leaf forms for domestic preparation and sale.

Light-colored, straight-grained, relatively soft timber suitable for light construction, furniture, door and window frames, and turned articles. Sapwood is reported as suitable for kraft pulp and paper; mature wood is used for match splints and pencil slats in some markets. Bark and young shoots yield coarse fiber used for cordage and rope.
Properties relevant to use:
Low density and straight grain enable easy sawing, planing, and turning. Reported lignin and cellulose composition supports kraft pulping; sapwood is preferred for pulp due to lower extractive content. Fiber from bark and young shoots is coarse but flexible, appropriate for low-twist cordage.
Sustainability and sourcing:
Widely cultivated in South and Southeast Asia as an avenue and shade tree; harvested from plantations and naturalized stands. Fast growth and coppicing ability support managed harvesting, reducing pressure on natural forests.
