Paederia foetida, commonly called stinking nettle, is widely used in tropical folk medicine. Among the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria, a decoction of the fresh leaves is brewed to treat fever and malaria, as reported by Olatunji et al., 2015. In the highlands of Ethiopia, the bark is macerated in water to produce a poultice that is applied to skin ulcers and wounds, according to a 2017 ethnobotanical survey by Mekonnen and Tadesse. In the Indian state of Kerala, the leaves are steeped in hot water to make a mild tea that is drunk after meals to aid digestion, as documented by Sharma et al., 2016. These preparations are all based on infusions or decoctions, the most common form of administration in these cultures.
A simple, safe recipe for a fever‑relief tea is as follows: take 10 g of dried Paederia foetida leaves, add them to 250 ml of boiling water, and let the mixture steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, pour into a cup, and drink one cup twice daily. This dosage is within the limits used in traditional practice and is considered safe for most adults; however, pregnant women and individuals with a history of gastrointestinal sensitivity should avoid it, as the plant contains alkaloids that can irritate the stomach lining.
The therapeutic effects of Paederia foetida are largely attributed to its well‑established phytochemicals.
