General Uses Top

Common products: Small, extremely hard, dense, lustrous timber from heartwood (yellow to yellowish brown) used locally for tool handles, walking sticks, craft pieces, and small turnery; small-dimension poles and fence posts; occasionally burned as fuel wood for its heat value.

Industrial and craft applications: Dense, fine-grain wood suitable for small turned objects, craft inlays, knife scales, and tool handles where abrasion resistance and dimensional stability are important. Limited by small stem size and extreme hardness; commercial-scale applications are rare.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal): No documented non-medicinal food or beverage uses; all uses of this species are for timber, fuel, and minor craft purposes.

Colorants and tanning: Yellow to brownish dyes and brown tannins can be extracted from heartwood and bark; used historically as a brown to yellowish natural dye for textiles and leather. Materials contain stilbene-type phenolics (including derivatives related to resveratrol) and condensed tannins that fix readily to protein fibers.

Wood and fiber: Timber sources are heartwood and sapwood; fiber applications are limited to small craft and tool-handle uses due to stem size and high density. Wood is valued for fine grain, smoothness, and durability.

Fragrance and cosmetics: No documented fragrance or cosmetic uses.

Properties relevant to use: High density, extreme hardness, fine and even grain, and good dimensional stability confer durability and wear resistance for handles and small craft objects. The high-energy content makes the wood suitable as fuel. Stilbene-type phenolics and condensed tannins provide dye and tanning functionality. The wood is reported to be difficult to plane due to brittleness and grain irregularities, but polishes to a lustrous finish.

Standards and regulation: No specific timber or dye standards are reported for this species.

Sustainability and sourcing: Limited availability due to small stem dimensions and habitat constraints; overharvest for tool handles could pose local risk. Propagation and sustainable management protocols are not well established.
