General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
The bark of Alnus alnobetula is a source of hydrolysable ellagitannins used to prepare vegetable-tanning extracts. Alder bark extracts also serve as mordants and colorants in dyeing.
Industrial and craft applications:
- Bark tannin extracts are used as high-pH, metal-free mordants to fix natural dyes on protein fibers and as tannin-based wood adhesives.
- The wood is used as fuel, charcoal, and small-turning/carving stock.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
No verified non-medicinal food or beverage uses are documented for this taxon.
Colorants and tanning:
Bark and heartwood provide natural brown colorants. Bark tannins are employed in vegetable tanning of leather and as mordants for protein fibers, and in wood finishes; tannins act by chelating metals and binding to proteins and cellulose.
Wood and fiber:
The wood, typically small-dimension, is used for fuel, charcoal, and small craft items. Its use as general construction timber is limited by size.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
Essential oil and extracts from bark are used in natural fragrance and cosmetic formulations as fixing agents and color-bearing materials.
Properties relevant to use:
- Hydrolyzable ellagitannins with strong metal-binding and protein-affinity activity support tanning, mordanting, adhesive, and dye-fixing functions.
- Wood is moderate-density, readily ignites, and yields high-quality charcoal.
Standards and regulation:
Use in leather tanning follows established EU leather-tannin extract specifications; fragrance and cosmetic uses are subject to general IFRA guidelines and EU cosmetic regulation, including specific restrictions where applicable.
Sustainability and sourcing:
Alnus alnobetula commonly occurs as a pioneer species and nitrogen-fixer in subalpine and boreal ecosystems; sustainable harvest typically involves coppicing and retention of mature plants to maintain soil stability and mycorrhizal networks. Certification under forest management schemes is not established.
