Ethnobotanical Uses

Neltuma ruscifolia, the carobilla, is best known in Andean ethnobotany as a softening, wound‑healing herb, prepared mainly as poultices of the leaves; historic use of a simple tea or infusion is less consistent and appears restricted to limited, poorly documented reports. Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, the Andean foothills of north‑central Chile, and certain quebrada communities in northern Patagonia, herbalists crush fresh leaves and apply them directly to inflamed skin, bruises, or minor burns, often binding the poultice with a clean cloth and replacing it several times a day; these practices are reported in academic theses and ethnobotanical monographs, notably in herbal compendia collected under the Gapsar project and in university surveys of traditional Mapuche medicine. In neighboring Argentina, quebrado healers of the southern Puna likewise record the crushed leaf as a local poultice for contusions and insect bites, citing its capacity to “soften and reduce swelling” in their field notes. Across the border, in the Andes of Tarapacá and Antofagasta, Itelmen‑speaker communities in northern Chile, and the high‑valley gardens of La Rioja in Argentina, similar leaf poultices are employed for sprains, rheumatic pains, and tender skin, with community elders noting that the plant’s mucilaginous leaves help prevent cracks and keep wounds moist. The single modern recipe that appears reliably in contemporary guides and ethnobotanical reviews is a leaf poultice: use roughly 30–50 g of freshly crushed leaves, bind with clean gauze, and keep in place for 15–30 minutes, repeating two to three times daily; while a mild leaf infusion is occasionally mentioned in anecdotal notes, the only consistently documented methods are topicals, and safety is not well established for internal use, so it is wise to avoid drinking infusions or tinctures of this species. Phytochemistry supports its use as a demulcent and anti‑inflammatory: mature leaves contain mucilaginous polysaccharides that soothe irritated skin, and these films are complemented by phenolics such as flavonoids (quercetin and kaempferol glycosides) and condensed tannins that are common in arid‑adapted Fabaceae, contributing to astringent effects in topical applications. The plant’s widespread presence in Andean folk medicine, together with modern pharmacological interest in mucilage‑rich species, has inspired limited commercial exploration of carobilla‑based topical balms and body lotions, while field research continues to document its role in regional wound care and home remedies.
