Ethnobotanical Uses

Traditional tea, decoction, and poultice preparations of Myrsine seguinii have been recorded in southern China and northern Vietnam. Among the Kinh and Nung communities of Ha Giang province in northern Vietnam, people use a mild leaf decoction to wash affected skin and drink a bitter tea for stomach discomfort; the preparation typically involves boiling two handfuls of fresh leaves in one liter of water for ten to fifteen minutes (Sikai et al., 2015). In Yunnan's Nanling Mountains, Hakka Hak people apply a warm poultice of crushed leaves over arthritic joints and pour a cool leaf infusion over insect bites for itching and swelling (Zhong et al., 2013). Also in Yunnan, Miao women drink a short infusion of young leaves after childbirth to ease abdominal cramps and reduce bleeding (Hou et al., 2012).

One practical recipe is a mild leaf tea used in Yunnan for stomach comfort. Place two handfuls (roughly 10–15 g) of fresh young leaves in 500 ml cold water, bring to a boil, and simmer for five minutes; cool to drinkable warmth and consume one cup in the morning and again after meals. The decoction retains minimal bitterness and is traditionally taken in small amounts only, with caution during pregnancy because of potential uterine activity (Zhong et al., 2013).

Well‑established phytochemicals reported in Myrsine seguinii include high‑molecular weight hydrolyzable tannins, triterpenoids such as ursolic and oleanolic acids, and flavonoids (quercetin and kaempferol derivatives) present in the leaves and stems (Cao et al., 2012). These constituents provide astringency and antimicrobial effects that plausibly account for topical poultice use on bites and washes for skin irritation (Sikai et al., 2015).

Modern relevance remains limited: limited pharmacological studies and scarce commercial availability are noted, while occasional local tea preparation persists in small communities along the China–Vietnam border (Hou et al., 2012).

It is employed as a low‑growing evergreen hedge, screening plant, and occasionally as a foundation planting in public parks, private gardens, and urban greening projects. The species is listed in horticultural databases such as the RHS Plant Finder and is routinely offered by nurseries specializing in subtropical and warm‑temperate ornamentals. Its compact habit, dense foliage, and tolerance to regular pruning make it suitable for formal and informal hedges, as well as for topiary and container displays.

Properties relevant to use:
The plant’s horticultural performance is attributed to several physical and physiological traits. It retains dark green, leathery leaves throughout the year, providing continuous visual coverage. Growth is moderate, allowing quick establishment of a hedge. The species tolerates well‑drained soils and adapts to full‑sun to partial‑shade exposures. When traded internationally, Myrsine seguinii is subject to plant health legislation such as the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and the EU Plant Health Directive. Exporters must obtain phytosanitary certificates confirming freedom from quarantine pests, and importers conduct inspections upon entry. In the United Kingdom, the Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate (PHSI) enforces compliance, while similar national bodies oversee trade in other jurisdictions.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Propagation is achieved primarily through vegetative cuttings and seed sowing, enabling large‑scale production without reliance on wild harvest. While the species occurs naturally in several Chinese provinces and Taiwan, it is not listed as threatened. Sustainable nursery practices therefore emphasize the use of cultivated stock to reduce pressure on wild populations.
