Many sources record that Japanese persimmon is traditionally taken as a beverage made from the leaves, with the drink used as a tonic or gentle astringent and, in modern practice, as an antihypertensive beverage. In Japan, leaf tea is listed in classical pharmacopoeia and ethnobotanical surveys and has been used in both domestic and tea‑bag form (Yamamoto, 1968; Matsukawa et al., 1966). Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, an ethnobotanical study also documents leaf teas of related Diospyros species used for digestive and circulatory complaints (Bennett et al., 2021). In China and Korea, decoctions or strong infusions of persimmon leaves have been recorded as folk remedies for hypertension, diarrhea, and as a bitter tonic (Burkill, 1935; Nie and Huang, 1988). A Japanese pharmacognosy text adds that leaf infusions were historically consumed for upper‑respiratory irritation and mild abdominal astringency (Handbuch der Pharmakognosie, 1905–1906).

Traditional preparations are straightforward. For leaf tea, place about 3–5 grams of dried, well‑washed leaves per cup of water, pour nearly boiling water over them, and steep 3–5 minutes before removing the leaves; avoid boiling to limit astringency and pour off the liquid. If you prefer a stronger decoction, simmer 5–7 grams of leaves in 200–250 milliliters of water for 5 minutes, then cool briefly and strain. A tincture can be made by macerating 20 grams of dried leaves in 100 milliliters of 45% ethanol for 2 weeks in a sealed jar, shaking daily, then straining; this yields a roughly 1:5 by weight preparation. Safety: because tannin‑rich preparations can be constipating and may affect blood pressure, keep intake modest and avoid strong doses during pregnancy or if taking antihypertensive medication; children should receive small, infrequent servings.

Well‑established phytochemicals in the leaves include catechins and related flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, vitamin C, and pentacyclic triterpenes such as betulinic and ursolic acids. These astringent polyphenols plausibly account for the traditional use as a mild digestive astringent and for the documented antihypertensive beverage in East Asia (Yao et al., 2009; Hsieh and Hou, 2009).

Modern relevance is clear: commercial leaf teas and extracts remain available in Japan, China, and Korea, while recent studies continue to investigate the chemical profile and physiological effects of persimmon leaves, alongside their continued domestic use as a quotidian beverage.
