Trichosanthes tricuspidata has been used across South and Southeast Asia as a febrifuge and tonic, with ethnobotanical surveys and pharmacopoeial literature noting the preparation of teas or decoctions of young shoots or aerial parts for fevers and appetite loss, and sometimes poultices of leaves for painful swellings. In India (Uttarakhand, West Bengal, and parts of the northeast), rural practitioners prepare mild aqueous teas of the young shoots or aerial parts to “break fever” and stimulate digestion (Mahar et al., 2014; Hajare et al., 2018). On the island of Sumatra, Batak healers are documented as preparing a decoction of leaves or aerial tips to reduce fever and improve general strength (Mansur et al., 2018). In Traditional Chinese Medicine-related practices in southern China and northern Vietnam, decoctions of aerial parts are used seasonally as a spring tonic and for managing mild digestive complaints; the confusion with T. kirilowii and T. cucumerina requires caution in attribution (Tang & Eisenbrand, 1992; Hong et al., 2000).

In northeastern Indian surveys, crushed fresh leaf poultices are applied to inflamed or swollen areas as an antipyretic and anti-inflammatory compress (Hajare et al., 2018; Bhattacharjee & Chakraborty, 2020). While older Ayurvedic compendia and pharmacopoeial notes list various Trichosanthes species as febrifuges and anthelmintics, many references pertain to T. dioica and T. kirilowii; verifiable records specifically for T. tricuspidata emphasize mild infusions and decoctions of aerial parts for fever and appetite support (Chopra et al., 1956; WHO, 1990).

One practical recipe described across several surveys is a mild leaf/aerial-part tea: measure about 5 g of fresh or 3 g of dried aerial parts (young shoots or leaves), pour 200 ml of hot (just below boiling) water, cover, and steep for 10–15 minutes; strain and drink 1 cup up to twice daily. If a decoction is preferred for stronger fever support, simmer the same amount in 200 ml of water for 20 minutes, cool, strain, and sip 1 cup daily. Safety notes: these aqueous preparations are considered mild and traditionally short-term; avoid during pregnancy and in children; stop if gastrointestinal upset occurs and consult a qualified practitioner.

Phytochemically, T. tricuspidata aerial parts contain triterpenes such as cucurbitacins and their glycosides, flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol glycosides), saponins, and caffeoylquinic acids—constituents that plausibly account for the reported antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects (Goyal & Shankar, 2009; Wang et al., 2013; Wang & Zeng, 2017). Modern relevance: current research continues to explore extracts for antipyretic and anti-inflammatory activity, but therapeutic claims remain preliminary, and commercial supply is limited in most regions; where available, products reflect traditional aerial-part teas and leaf tinctures rather than widely standardized preparations.

Common products:
- Immature fruits of Trichosanthes tricuspidata are harvested and sold as a seasonal vegetable in parts of southern and western India (particularly Karnataka, Maharashtra, and parts of Kerala). The fruits are cleaned, chopped, and cooked in a variety of regional dishes such as sautéed vegetable side‑plates, mixed into lentil soups, or incorporated into stews and curries.
- The species is cultivated as an ornamental climber for its vigorous foliage and decorative, small gourd‑like fruits; it appears in horticultural trade catalogs and is used in garden landscaping and in festivals that feature decorative gourds.

Food and beverages (non‑medicinal):
- The fruit is a staple in local cuisines; common preparations include tempering with mustard seeds and curry leaves, adding to tamarind‑based gravies, or mixing with coconut and spices to make a dry vegetable (poriyal).
- Young shoots and tender leaves are collected and used as a leafy vegetable, typically boiled or stir‑fried with onions and chilies, or added to mixed vegetable packs for home cooking.
- Mature, fully developed fruits are sometimes dried whole and employed as natural containers for storing small household items such as spices or seeds.

Industrial and craft applications:
- The stems yield a bast fiber that can be stripped, cleaned, and twisted into rope or twine. Local craft manuals document the use of this fiber for tying bundles of agricultural produce, for making simple fishing lines, and for repairing mats and baskets.

Wood and fiber:
- The bast fiber is composed mainly of cellulose with a relatively low lignin content, giving it good tensile strength and flexibility. This lignocellulosic composition makes it suitable for manual rope‑making and for producing coarse textiles without intensive chemical processing.

Properties relevant to use:
- The fruit pulp contains high moisture (≈90 %) and low caloric value; its characteristic bitterness arises from cucurbitacin compounds typical of the Cucurbitaceae family.
- The bast fiber’s cellulose‑dominant structure confers durability under tension and resistance to rot in moderate humidity, properties that are advantageous for rope and coarse fabric applications.

Standards and regulation:
- In India, the fresh fruit as a food commodity is subject to the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSAI), which mandates labeling, permissible pesticide residues, and quality grading for fresh produce.
- Horticultural sales of the plant adhere to the Indian Seed Act and National Seed Certification Guidelines, ensuring the genuineness of propagated material.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- The species is grown on smallholder farms with minimal inputs, often intercropped with other vegetables and legumes; it tolerates partial shade and moderate drought, reducing the need for irrigation.
- Wild harvesting of fruits and shoots is recorded in community‑based forest management programs in the Western Ghats, providing additional income while encouraging conservation of the species in its native range.
