Pachycereus pringlei (S.Watson) Britton & Rose, commonly called the cardón, dominates the Sonoran Desert of northwestern Mexico and southern Arizona. Its massive stem and occasional flower buds have been used for generations by several Indigenous groups to treat common ailments. Among the Yaqui of northern Mexico, a decoction of young stems is taken for urinary complaints (Bennett et al., 2021). The Mayo of Sinaloa traditionally brew an infusion of the flower buds to relieve cough and throat irritation (Jolly, 1974). On the coast, the Comcaac (Seri) people crush the inner flesh of the stem into a poultice that they apply directly to skin infections and wounds (Nabhan et al., 1996). In the Tohono O'odham villages of Arizona, a cold maceration of dried stem pulp is used to ease digestive distress (García‑López et al., 2022). Each practice selects a specific plant part: the young stem, the flower bud, or the inner flesh.
A simple and repeatable preparation that mirrors the Yaqui remedy is a cardón stem decoction. Measure 15 g of dried young stems (roughly a handful of 1–2 cm pieces) and place them in a saucepan with 500 mL of fresh water. Bring the water to a gentle boil, then simmer for 10–12 minutes. Turn off the heat, let the mixture steep for an additional 5 minutes, and strain the liquid through a fine cloth. The resulting tea is a clear, slightly mucilaginous drink. The recommended dose is 100 mL taken twice daily. Safety considerations include avoiding this decoction during pregnancy or while using prescription diuretics, and limiting continuous use to no more than two weeks unless supervised by a health practitioner.

Modern research reflects a renewed interest in the cardón’s therapeutic potential. Recent laboratory work has confirmed mild diuretic and antimicrobial activity in extracts of the stem (García‑López et al., 2022), and small specialty producers in northern Mexico now market a standardized “cardón tea” aimed at urinary support. While commercial products remain niche, traditional healers in Yaqui, Mayo and Seri communities continue to prepare the same infusions and poultices, preserving a centuries‑old herbal practice in an increasingly globalized market.
