Among the Han in central China, dried rhizomes are decocted as a tonic tea for qi deficiency (Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China, 2020; Ma et al., 2020). Usually 15 g of sliced rhizome are simmered in 500 ml of water for 30 min, then strained; the decoction is taken twice daily.

In the Yao communities of northern Vietnam, fresh leaf infusions are used to reduce fever and dysentery (Nguyen et al., 2019). About 10 g of young leaves are poured into 200 ml of near‑boiling water and steeped 5 min, the liquid is consumed warm.

The Miao of southwestern China apply a macerated rhizome paste to painful joints (Wang et al., 2022). Slices of fresh rhizome (≈20 g) are crushed with 30 ml of cold water, left to macerate 30 min, then spread on the affected area as a poultice for 30 min.

Among Thai hill‑tribe practitioners, a 1:5 ethanol tincture of the rhizome is prepared for gastrointestinal discomfort (Khan et al., 2018). The tincture is taken in small drops under the tongue.

These examples illustrate documented infusions, decoctions, macerations and tinctures for Polygonatum kingianum.

To make a standard “Huang Jing” tea, combine 15 g of dried, sliced rhizome of Polygonatum kingianum with 500 ml of filtered water in a saucepan, bring to a boil, then reduce to a gentle simmer for 30 min. Remove from heat, let the liquid settle, and strain through a fine mesh. The decoction yields roughly 400 ml of tea; a dose of 100 ml can be taken twice a day, preferably after meals. Safety note: pregnant or lactating women should avoid this preparation, as there is insufficient safety data for Polygonatum kingianum; the tea may also modestly lower blood glucose, so individuals on insulin or hypoglycemic drugs should monitor their levels.

Chemical analyses of P. kingianum have identified several groups of phytochemicals that plausibly account for its traditional actions. The rhizomes are rich in high‑molecular‑weight polysaccharides (mainly β‑glucans), which have demonstrated immunomodulatory and antioxidant activity in vitro and in animal models (Li et al., 2020). Saponins of the spirostanol type are present (e.g., diosgenin‑based saponins), and these compounds are known to exhibit anti‑inflammatory effects (Zhang et al., 2019). Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol derivatives have been isolated, contributing antioxidant capacity, while phenolic acids like caffeic and ferulic acids further support the plant’s free‑radical scavenging profile (Wang et al., 2021). Together, these constituents provide a biochemical basis for the tonic, antipyretic and analgesic uses recorded across the listed cultures.

Ongoing research is expanding the clinical evidence for Polygonatum kingianum polysaccharides in immune support, and commercial preparations of the dried rhizome are now sold as dietary supplements throughout East Asia, sustaining both traditional practice and modern health markets.
