Agave utahensis, the small rosette agave of the desert Southwest, has a modest but documented record of medicinal use that relies on infusions and decoctions of its leaves and roots. Among the Southern Paiute of the Utah–Nevada border, a hot infusion of fresh leaves was taken to lower fever (Moerman, 1998). The same plant part was boiled as a decoction by the Ute of Colorado for treating colds and respiratory congestion (Hunn, 2002). The Hopi of northern Arizona prepared a strong root decoction that was administered to stop diarrhea (Kelly, 2005). In addition, the Shoshone of eastern Nevada crushed fresh leaves and applied the moist pulp as a poultice on open wounds to promote healing (Meyer, 2008). These three ethnolinguistic groups represent the primary documented sources for the plant’s medicinal applications.
Two simple preparations illustrate the traditional practice. For a mild leaf tea, take about 10 g of dried leaf material (roughly one small handful), add it to 250 ml of freshly boiled water, cover, and let steep for five to ten minutes. The liquid is strained and drunk warm, one cup two or three times a day. The same amount of fresh leaves can be simmered in 250 ml of water for ten minutes to make a decoction for coughs. A safety note: agave leaves contain steroidal saponins that can irritate the stomach if taken in large quantities; the tea should not be used during pregnancy and total daily intake should not exceed three cups.
The therapeutic activity is plausibly linked to well‑studied phytochemicals found in Agave utahensis. Chemical investigations have identified steroidal saponins such as hecogenin and agavoside A (Bory et al., 1994; Hufford et al., 2003), compounds known for anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. The leaves also contain phenolic acids, notably ferulic acid, which contributes antioxidant properties (Wang et al., 2012). These constituents together help explain the historical use of the leaf infusion for fever and the root decoction for gastrointestinal distress.
Modern research has begun to explore these traditional applications. Recent laboratory studies show that ethanolic extracts of Agave utahensis leaf inhibit the growth of common skin bacteria, supporting the Shoshone poultice use (Sanchez et al., 2017). While the plant is now cultivated primarily as an ornamental succulent in the desert landscape, several local Indigenous communities continue to harvest the leaves for the same fever‑relieving tea that their ancestors prepared (Smith, 2020).

Agave utahensis is cultivated as an ornamental plant for desert landscaping, xeriscaping, and rock‑garden settings. Nursery production supplies whole plants (potted seedlings or offsets) and cuttings that are sold for residential, municipal, and commercial landscape projects. Propagation is primarily by seed and vegetative offsets; no horticultural cultivars have been formally named. Seed packets are also marketed to hobbyist growers; germination occurs under warm, moist conditions, but seedlings are slow‑growing and require several years before reaching flowering size, a factor that shapes market availability.
Properties relevant to use:
The species exhibits strong drought tolerance, a consequence of its crassulacean acid metabolism and water‑storage tissue in succulent leaves. It maintains an evergreen rosette habit throughout the year and tolerates winter temperatures in USDA hardiness zones 5–6, which correspond to lows of about –15 °C. Leaf parenchyma makes up the bulk of leaf volume, providing substantial internal water reserves that sustain the plant through prolonged dry periods. The CAM pathway allows nocturnal CO₂ uptake, reducing daytime water loss, while thick, fibrous leaf margins confer mechanical resilience against herbivory and fire. These physiological traits enable its use in low‑maintenance, water‑conserving landscapes where supplemental irrigation is limited.
Scientific uses:
A. utahensis has been incorporated into phylogenetic investigations of Agave and related genera using nuclear ribosomal ITS and chloroplast DNA regions (e.g., Good‑Avila et al., 2006). Publicly available sequence data for this taxon are deposited in GenBank and serve as a reference for comparative genomics of crassulacean acid metabolism.
Sustainability and sourcing:
Wild populations are restricted to southwestern Utah, northern Nevada, and northwestern Arizona, with many occurrences within protected lands such as Grand Staircase‑Escalante National Monument. Commercial supply is based on cultivated propagation, reducing pressure on natural stands. The species is not listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, and its conservation status is considered stable. Collection of wild seeds is regulated in Utah, requiring permits. Propagation by nurseries follows standard horticultural practices that minimize spread into natural habitats. No commercial harvest for timber, fiber, or food has been documented.
