Across East and Central Asia, Lycopodium japonicum has long been valued as a wound wash and topical anti‑inflammatory. In traditional Chinese medicine, Shen Jin Cao (the dried aerial parts) is recorded as a decoction or wash for traumatic injuries, rheumatic pain, and snakebite, with dosage in the 9–15 g range for external use (Chinese Materia Medica, 1985). Across the broader Himalaya, Ayurvedic texts from North India and Nepal list the herb as a mild diuretic and nervine given as a decoction of the aerial parts (Joshi, 2000). In Mongolia and Buryatia, herders prepare poultices of the stem–leaf mass to ease sore joints and muscle strains (Agapitov and Dugarsuren, 2005). Local herbal manuals in northern Thailand further note teas or decoctions of the dried plant given for urinary complaints and “wind‑damp” arthralgia (Smitinand, 2001). These uses are traditionally external or given in modest amounts for short periods.
A practical, widely documented approach is a fresh‑herb poultice for localized joint or soft‑tissue discomfort. Take 15–20 g of freshly gathered aerial parts (leaves and stems), bruise lightly, then cover the painful area with the moistened mass, securing with a clean cloth. Reapply 2–3 times daily as needed. Because the plant contains hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids typical of the genus, internal use is generally discouraged; do not ingest, and avoid topical use on broken skin (Chevallier, 2016).
The therapeutic profile aligns with phytochemistry that is well characterized for the species. Aerial parts contain characteristic Lycopodium alkaloids such as huperzine A, lycodine, lycopsamine, and annotinine, together with flavonoids and phenolic acids, which together can explain the observed anti‑inflammatory and mild analgesic actions in traditional practice (Jiang et al., 2004; Che et al., 2012). The presence of these alkaloids underlies the caution around internal use.
Today, the plant remains an occasional ingredient in traditional topical liniments and poultices, while isolated huperzine A is pursued in modern research on cholinesterase inhibition and neuroprotection. Users can still find dried aerial parts or prepared washes from herb suppliers, but should apply them only as short‑term, external remedies and consult a qualified practitioner before any internal use.
