Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus, also known as springy turf-moss in the UK and square goose neck moss in the US, is a widespread species of moss found in Eurasia and North America. It has also been introduced to the Southern Hemisphere, where it is considered an invasive species. This moss is typically found in man-made habitats such as lawns and golf courses and is closely related to R. subpinnatus. It has broad ecological tolerances and is known for its distinctive leaves that bend sharply at a right angle. R. squarrosus has a circumpolar distribution and is commonly found in heavily grazed pastures and regularly mown fairways. It was first described by Johann Hedwig in 1801 and has been the subject of taxonomic confusion with other species. In addition, R. squarrosus has been shown to have intermediate sensitivity to the herbicide Asulam. Its genus name, Rhytidiadelphus, is derived from the Greek words for "wrinkled" and "brother," while its specific epithet, squarrosus, refers to its distinctive leaves.
