Curcuma caesia, also known as black turmeric or black zedoary, is a perennial herb with bluish-black rhizomes that is native to northeast India. Its cultivation and harvest practices are similar to that of common turmeric. The rhizomes are boiled and dried before being packed for marketing. Research has identified various chemical constituents in the volatile oil of the rhizomes, including camphor, ar-turmerone, and 1,8-cineole. Other studies have shown the presence of diphenylalkanoids, phenylpropene derivatives, terpenoids, flavonoids, steroids, and alkaloids.
