Koelreuteria paniculata, also known as the goldenrain tree, pride of India, China tree, or varnish tree, is a popular landscape tree native to eastern Asia. It was introduced to Europe in 1747 and America in 1763. This small to medium-sized deciduous tree has a broad, dome-shaped crown and pinnate leaves with serrated margins. Its yellow flowers grow in large panicles and are followed by bladder-like pods containing dark brown to black seeds. There are several varieties of this tree, including one with variegated foliage. It is commonly grown as an ornamental tree in temperate regions around the world and has been selected for garden planting. However, in some areas, it is considered an invasive species.
