Across southern and southeastern Brazil, Trichilia claussenii has been used as a wound-healing bark decoction, with several sources indicating topical wash or poultice applications for cuts and sores (Mors and Rizzini, 1997; Hammer and Knaus, 2001; Agra et al., 2007). In traditional midwifery, a postpartum wash made from the boiled bark is reported for perineal care and uterine hygiene (Mors and Rizzini, 1997; Ghirardini, 2018). Some informants in Minas Gerais and rural Rio de Janeiro describe a “tea” or warm infusion of bark taken internally to treat diarrhea and stomach complaints (Mors and Rizzini, 1997; Agra et al., 2007).

For a practical preparation, decoction using 5–10 g of sliced fresh bark in 250–300 mL water is typical. Bring to a boil, simmer for 10–15 minutes, cool to a comfortably warm temperature, and either swish and spit as a mouth rinse or apply as a compress to clean skin; strain before use. For a stronger wash, repeat with fresh material once daily. Based on regional practice and published pharmacopoeial experience with related barbatimão species, short-term topical use is generally safer than long-term internal dosing; avoid during pregnancy and lactation, and do not exceed one week of oral use without medical advice. These cautions reflect the traditional formulation reported by Hammer and Knaus (2001) and contraindication notes compiled by Agra et al. (2007).

The activity of Trichilia claussenii is commonly attributed to its high tannin content, notably condensed tannins (proanthocyanidins), along with gallic acid and related phenolics, which have astringent and antimicrobial properties (Mors and Rizzini, 1997; Ghirardini, 2018). These constituents align with the reported wound-healing and antidiarrheal applications.

Today, the species is harvested from the wild in parts of Brazil for local medicinal commerce and continues to be prepared at home or in small shops as bark decoctions for skin and oral care (Mors and Rizzini, 1997). Research on related Meliaceae has renewed interest in its potential, though formulations often remain faithful to traditional methods and plant parts (Ghirardini, 2018).
