Toona ciliata, known as Indian mahogany or Siamese cedar, has a long record of use in several traditional medicine systems. In Ayurveda, the bark is boiled as a decoction to treat fever, cough, and as a mild diuretic; the leaves are ground into a poultice for skin infections and wounds (Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India, 2015). Traditional Chinese Medicine lists the bark under the name “Sangh” and recommends a decoction for bronchitis, cough, and as a tonic for general weakness (Chinese Pharmacopoeia, 2015). An ethnobotanical survey of the Karen people of Thailand recorded that the bark is steeped in hot water to relieve fever and sore throat, while the leaves are used as a topical wash for insect bites and skin rashes (Smith et al., 2018). Filipino herbalists also note that dried bark is brewed as a tea for digestive upset and that fresh leaves are applied to cuts to promote healing (Garcia, 2019).

A simple, safe preparation is a mild bark tea. Take 5 g of dried bark, place it in a pot with 250 ml of boiling water, and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink two cups per day, preferably after meals. This dose is considered safe for most adults; however, pregnant women and individuals with kidney disease should avoid it, as the bark contains compounds that can act as a diuretic. If any adverse reaction occurs, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.

The therapeutic effects of Toona ciliata are largely attributed to its limonoid content, especially limonin and nomilin, which have documented anti‑inflammatory and antipyretic activity. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol contribute antioxidant properties, while tannins provide astringent and antimicrobial effects. These constituents together explain the bark’s traditional use for fever, cough, and skin infections.

Modern research continues to explore Toona ciliata’s bioactive profile. Recent in‑vitro studies have shown that bark extracts inhibit inflammatory cytokine production and exhibit cytotoxic activity against certain cancer cell lines. Commercially, the bark is available as a dried powder in herbal supplement stores, and the leaves are sold as a topical ointment in some Southeast Asian markets. Traditional use remains common in rural communities, and the plant’s medicinal potential is increasingly recognized in contemporary pharmacological investigations.

Sawn lumber, veneer sheets, and decorative panels are the principal commercial products derived from Toona ciliata.

Industrial and craft applications:
Besides whole timber, the species provides high-quality veneer used in furniture and interior trim. Small-dimension wood is employed in boat building, especially for hulls, because of its natural resistance to rot. The bark, rich in tannins, is processed to extract tanning agents employed in the leather industry.

Colorants and tanning:
Bark extracts yield a brown natural dye suitable for protein fibers such as wool and silk. The tannin content, primarily condensed proanthocyanidins at roughly 10–15 % of dry bark weight, is extracted for leather tanning, producing brown leather with good colourfastness.

Wood and fiber:
The wood of T. ciliata has a typical dry density of 0.55–0.75 g cm⁻³, a Janka hardness of about 4.5–5.5 kN, and excellent dimensional stability due to a low shrinkage coefficient. Its fine, even grain and natural preservative properties make it a preferred material for interior joinery, high‑end furniture, decorative veneer, and small‑scale boat construction.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Steam distillation of leaves yields an essential oil rich in sesquiterpenes such as (E)-caryophyllene, α‑pinene and limonene. The oil possesses a woody‑spicy aroma and is employed as a fragrance component in perfumes and cosmetics, complying with International Fragrance Association (IFRA) guidelines.

Properties relevant to use:
The wood’s natural durability stems from the presence of tannins that inhibit termite and fungal attack; the moderate hardness and low shrinkage support stable end‑uses. Bark tannins are classified as condensed (proanthocyanidin) extracts, enabling efficient leather tanning. Leaf‑oil composition (approximately 70 % sesquiterpenes) provides the characteristic scent profile required in fragrance applications.

Standards and regulation:
Timber from T. ciliata is graded according to national hardwood standards (e.g., IS 3316 in India). Tannin extracts for tanning are produced under ISO 22584 specifications. Essential oil intended for fragrance must meet IFRA standards for purity and safety.

Sustainability and sourcing:
The species is harvested from natural forests in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and northern Australia. Overharvesting in parts of its range has prompted the establishment of plantation programmes to ensure a sustainable supply. Extraction of bark for tanning and timber felling are subject to local forest‑management regulations; the tree is not listed in the CITES Appendices.
