Across the Neotropics, people have valued Swietenia macrophylla for the same kinds of simple remedies it is known for elsewhere. Among Garifuna and Q’eqchi’ healers in Belize, the inner bark is boiled as a bitter decoction taken in small doses to “break” malarial fevers, according to Balick & Arvigo in their 1998 Garifuna ethnomedicine monograph. In Trinidad and other Caribbean communities, seeds are macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture used as an antihypertensive, a practice recorded by Lans in 2007. In the Brazilian Amazon, the bark is commonly decocted into a strong tea for diarrhea and dysentery, as reported by Santos et al. in their 2010 survey of regional antidiarrheal plants. In southern India, leaf and seed infusions have been prepared as bitter tonics for stomach complaints, noted by Khare & Indian Medicinal Plants in 2007. All of these preparations share the logic of a short, hot infusion or decoction that concentrates bitter principles, followed by small, frequent doses.

A practical, widely used approach for a single preparation is a bark infusion: place 5–7 g of dried inner bark in a pot, cover with 250 mL water, bring to a gentle boil, and simmer for 8–10 minutes. Remove from heat, cover, and steep for an additional 10–15 minutes. Strain and drink one cup, one to two times daily, with food, for no longer than five consecutive days. Traditional teachers emphasize short courses and small amounts because bitter mahoganies can irritate the stomach and the whole plant is regarded as potentially hepatotoxic. Do not use if pregnant, nursing, or taking hepatotoxic drugs, and stop immediately if nausea or yellowing of skin develops. For a seed tincture with the recorded Trinidad usage, measure 20 g of coarsely ground seeds, place in a 1:5 ratio by weight with 100 mL of 45–60% ethanol, seal, and shake daily for 14 days, then filter. Typical internal dose is 1 mL three times a day in water, again keeping the course short and discontinuing if liver-related symptoms appear.

Phytochemistry explains the activity behind these remedies. Seeds and bark are rich in limonoids such as swietenolide, swietenine, and methyl angolensate, along with quassinoids and related tetranortriterpenoids. These bitter compounds stimulate digestive secretions, and laboratory studies show promising antibacterial and antimalarial actions, including activity against Plasmodium species.

Today, research on Swietenia macrophylla remains active and bittersweet. Scientific work continues to identify the most active limonoids and to assess their safety, while conservation concerns persist because the species is now listed in CITES Appendix II. The plant is still widely available in the Amazon and Caribbean as dried bark and seed tinctures, and the same short infusions and decoctions taught by village healers remain the everyday way it is used.

Industrial and craft applications:
The wood is employed in the manufacture of furniture, cabinetry, musical instruments (e.g., guitars, pianos), boat interiors, flooring, decorative panels, turned objects, and hand‑crafted art pieces. Its fine grain and reddish‑brown color make it prized for fine carpentry; the material is also used for laminated beams and specialized structural components where dimensional stability and durability are required.

Colorants and tanning:
The bark yields a high‑tannin extract used in traditional leather tanning, imparting a natural brown coloration and enhancing leather durability.

Wood and fiber:
Swietenia macrophylla is processed primarily into solid timber and veneer. Its high density and extractive content limit large‑scale kraft‑pulp production, though limited small‑scale pulp and paper making is reported for specialty high‑value grades.

Properties relevant to use:
Wood density ≈0.55–0.65 g cm⁻³, Janka hardness ~1 800–2 200 N, low shrinkage coefficient (≈0.3 % across the grain), good dimensional stability, natural resistance to insects and decay due to heartwood extractives, and attractive reddish‑brown heartwood with fine, interlocked grain that takes a high polish.

Standards and regulation:
Listed on CITES Appendix II, requiring export permits; governed by national timber legislation such as the EU Timber Regulation and national timber codes that mandate legality verification. ISO standards for hardwood lumber (e.g., ISO 13061 for moisture content, ISO 24294 for grading) apply to trade of Swietenia macrophylla timber.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List; many range countries (Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Bolivia, etc.) have imposed logging quotas and, in some regions, temporary logging bans. Sustainable management systems, including FSC certification and plantation propagation, are promoted to reduce pressure on wild populations. Traceability initiatives aim to curb illegal logging and ensure compliance with CITES and national regulations.
