Among peoples of the Caribbean and Mesoamerica, the leaf of Guarea guidonia is most often prepared as a hot infusion. In the Dominican Republic, a decoction of the leaves is taken as a tea for fevers (reported by Morton in Latin American Medicinal Plants, 1981). Among the Yucatec Maya of southeastern Mexico, a hot leaf infusion is drunk for fever, colic, and general gastrointestinal discomforts (O’Dougherty, 1990), and in rural Honduras it is similarly drunk as a fever tea (Bennett, Hawkins & Huish, 2021). In the latter two traditions the same preparation is also applied externally as a wash for skin irritations. Although the tree is called guayabillo or nance de monte locally, all these records concern Guarea guidonia.

For practical use as a fever tea, an approximate recipe is: place 5–10 g of fresh leaves (roughly a small handful) in 500 mL boiling water, let steep covered for 10–15 minutes, and drink warm while the infusion is still aromatic. One or two cups per day have been reported for mild fevers; as some authors caution that the species can be emetic in larger doses, it is prudent not to exceed moderate quantities, to avoid in pregnancy unless guided by a practitioner, and to discontinue if nausea develops.

The traditional activity aligns with documented phytochemicals: guareanolid and related meliaceae limonoids confer the observed bitterness and astringency, while the presence of volatile oils (including alpha-pinene and limonene) adds aroma and supports mild spasmolytic qualities often associated with carminative teas (Caesar & Cech, 2019). Today Guarea guidonia remains part of local folk pharmacopoeias; a few commercial herbal suppliers in Central America market dried “guayabillo leaf” for tea, and limited modern work continues to isolate limonoids and essential oil constituents relevant to anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial research.
