Ethnobotanical Uses of Rubus ulmifolius
Across the Mediterranean, people have long made simple leaf infusions for digestive complaints. Among communities in central and southern Italy, a mild tea of air‑dried R. ulmifolius leaves is taken for diarrhea and as a gargle for sore throats, sometimes mixed with honey and lemon; the same preparation is drunk at the onset of colds (Ghirardini et al., 2001). In nearby Albania and Albanian‑speaking parts of Kosovo, folk healers use a similar tea of dried leaves for stomach upset, sore throat, and as a general “stomachic” after meals, with the leaf infusion favored over fresh leaves for its soothing action (Sõukand & Pieroni, 2016). In southern Chile, Mapuche healers prepare a leaf infusion in water to treat gastrointestinal discomfort and sore mouth or throat, sometimes adding local herbs for flavor or perceived strength (Pieroni, 2000). In all three regions, the infusions are brief and gentle, underscoring a longstanding regional preference for mild leaf teas that are both drinkable and topical to the mouth and throat.
For those seeking a simple home preparation, a mild leaf tea works well. Place 1–2 teaspoons (about 1–2 g) of air‑dried R. ulmifolius leaves in a cup of just‑boiled water; cover and steep for 5–10 minutes, then strain. For a gargle, let it cool to a comfortably warm temperature and swish for 30 seconds. This amount is suitable for 1–3 cups daily, and the gargle can be used 2–3 times per day. While generally considered safe for most people, bramble‑leaf teas can lower blood sugar in sensitive individuals and may enhance the effect of antidiabetic or anticoagulant drugs; children and people who are pregnant or nursing should use leaf teas only under professional guidance.
Active constituents in R. ulmifolius leaves include tannins, flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol derivatives, phenolic acids including gallic and caffeic acids, and modest vitamin C and carotenoids. The astringent tannins plausibly explain the traditional use for mild diarrhea and sore throat, while the flavonoids and phenolic acids contribute antioxidant activity relevant to the calming and protective actions attributed to the infusions.
Today the species remains a commonly available wild edible and garden shrub in Mediterranean and Andean food systems; commercial herbal products featuring bramble leaves often list R. fruticosus or Rubus spp. rather than R. ulmifolius specifically, but traditional home infusions of bramble leaves continue in family and village practice, and ongoing ethnobotanical fieldwork documents sustained use across these regions.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Fruits are processed into commercial jams, jellies, preserves, compotes, and purees; also used in confectionery fillings and flavorings for dairy and baked goods. Whole or crushed fruits are used in alcoholic beverage production, including wine and distilled spirits. Limited quantities are marketed fresh.
Industrial and craft applications:
Fruit is processed into fermentation feedstocks for alcoholic beverages and may be used as a substrate for vinegar production; pulp remains a potential animal feed, though limited industrial documentation is available.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Fruit products and ingredients include jams/jellies, syrups, sauces, frozen fruit mixes, and bakery/preparation components (e.g., fillings, toppings). Industrial beverages use crushed or pressed fruit for mash, must, or base syrups prior to fermentation or dilution; post-fermentation residues are typically not cited as commercial inputs.
Colorants and tanning:
No documented use for dyes or tannins.
Wood and fiber:
No documented timber or fiber applications.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
Fruits are used as flavor/fragrance components in foods and some beverages; their cosmetic use is not documented.
Properties relevant to use:
Fruit high in soluble solids and acidity supports conventional jam/jelly setting after sugar addition and acidification; acid content and aroma compounds provide flavor profiles used in beverages.
Standards and regulation:
Food products are typically subject to general food safety and hygiene regulations (e.g., Codex Alimentarius, EU General Food Law, national food codes). For jams and jellies, market specifications may reference established compositional criteria (e.g., Codex Standard for Jams, Jellies and Marmalades).
Sustainability and sourcing:
Commercially supplied fruit comes from wild-collected populations (especially around the Mediterranean) and cultivated forms grown in managed stands; harvest practices are noted in regional cultivation literature.
