Numerous communities have recorded medicinal teas and decoctions of Prunus davidiana. In northeastern China, especially Hebei and Shanxi, the flower buds have been gathered in early spring for a bitter decoction used to “clear heat, dispel wind” and relieve congestion; the practice is documented in the modern Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China (2020 edition) and the “Encyclopedia of Chinese Medicinal Plants.” Across southwestern China and northern Vietnam, leaf infusions have been prepared to calm cough and treat indigestion, with regional uses summarized by Guo and Peng in Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2003). The Mapuche communities of southern Chile have occasionally infused dried leaves from ornamental trees planted in home gardens for tea as a mild digestive aid; the use is mentioned by Bennett et al., 2021.
One practical preparation is a leaf tea: steep 1–2 g of dried leaves in 200 ml of just-boiled water for 10–15 minutes, then strain. Traditional texts suggest one cup two to three times daily; the modern pharmacopoeia cautions against prolonged use, and the plant carries cyanide-containing cyanogenic glycosides, so avoid excessive amounts or use in pregnancy and while nursing.
The bitter taste and suspected antimicrobial activity are plausibly explained by amygdalin (a cyanogenic glycoside) and phenolic acids such as chlorogenic and caffeic acids reported in Phytochemistry Letters (2018) for P. davidiana leaves. These constituents help rationalize the historical use of flower buds and leaf infusions for respiratory and digestive relief in Chinese and Vietnamese practice.
Current research on P. davidiana remains modest compared to P. persica, yet recent studies confirm its phenolic profile and ongoing work explores antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential. While ornamental and horticultural cultivars are widely available, medicinal preparations are locally prepared and listed in modern herbal references, maintaining its niche presence in ethnomedicine.
General Uses Top

Scientific/model-organism use:
• Whole-genome sequencing of wild and cultivated materials has been published, producing draft genome assemblies and gene annotations; these are used in phylogenomics, domestication studies, and marker-assisted selection in Prunus breeding programs (e.g., peach and related stone fruits).
• Transcriptomic datasets from leaf, flower, and fruit tissues are deposited in public repositories and support comparative expression analyses in Rosaceae.
• Genetic resources (germplasm collections and mapped populations) are maintained by national fruit-tree research institutes and used for trait dissection, genome-wide association mapping, and genomic selection.
