Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, infusions of Filipendula ulmaria flowers were used as a gentle fever reducer and for respiratory complaints, noted by Bennett et al., 2021 in their ethnobotanical study of Patagonian healing plants. In the British Isles, meadow‑sweet flowers have long been made into a hot tea to treat fevers, colds, and rheumatic aches, a practice recorded in Grieve’s A Modern Herbal (1931) and cited by various pharmacognosy texts. In French and German folk medicine, a cold infusion of the flowers was taken for hay fever and catarrh, reported in Detailleur’s Les Plantes Médicinales (1932) and Madaus’s Lehrbuch der biologischen Heilmittel (1938). Eastern European sources also mention a tea or decoction of flowers and leaves for stomach irritation and as a diuretic, described in the early 20th‑century Polish Pharmacopoeia notes compiled by Szafer (1924).
A practical cold infusion for hay fever and upper respiratory irritation can be prepared by steeping 1 to 2 teaspoons (about 2–4 g) of dried flowers in 1 cup (≈240 mL) of just‑boiled water for 6–8 hours; strain and sip as needed. For a mild hot tea, use 1 to 2 teaspoons of flowers in 1 cup of water and steep 10–15 minutes. Avoid in pregnancy, in children, and in people allergic to aspirin or salicylate‑containing plants; due to salicylate content, use low doses and do not combine with anticoagulants without medical advice.
Well‑established constituents in meadow‑sweet include methyl salicylate (a major component of the essential oil), salicylaldehyde, flavonol glycosides such as quercetin and kaempferol derivatives, tannins, phenolic acids, and mucilage polysaccharides, which together support the plant’s historically reported antipyretic, anti‑inflammatory, and mild astringent actions.
Today, dried flowers are widely available in herbal stores, and modern research continues to evaluate meadowsweet’s anti‑inflammatory, antioxidant, and ulcer‑protective activities, while traditional teas and cold infusions remain in use for mild fevers and respiratory irritation.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
- Herb (dried aerial parts) used as a flavoring ingredient in traditional meads and beers, and as an aromatic additive in certain herbal beverages, principally in Central and Eastern Europe. The product is marketed by specialty producers and niche beverage manufacturers.
Industrial and craft applications:
- No significant industrial or craft uses are documented for this taxon.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
- Whole herb or extracts are employed as flavoring components in fermented beverages (e.g., mead) and in ready-to-drink herbal beverage preparations; flavor role is typically aromatic/vanillic-spicy with low dosage.
Colorants and tanning:
- No documented use as a textile dye or tannin source is supported by the current literature.
Wood and fiber:
- No documented timber, fiber, or bast-fiber uses.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
- No documented use in modern fragrance or cosmetic product formulations.
Properties relevant to use:
- Aromatic profile: contains salicylaldehyde-derived phenylpropanoids and vanillin-like constituents that impart characteristic sweet-spicy notes relevant to beverage flavoring.
Standards and regulation:
- No dedicated international standards for Filipendula ulmaria flavoring materials are established; beverages incorporating the herb are regulated under general national food additive and labeling laws.
Sustainability and sourcing:
- Wild-harvesting for small-scale beverage production is reported from parts of Central and Eastern Europe; no global supply chain metrics or sustainable sourcing certifications specific to this taxon are documented.

Germination/Propagation Top
Suggest a correction or add new data!| Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment. |
| Requires Light or Surface Sowing: These seeds need light to germinate and should not be covered with soil or only very lightly. They are often very small and sown directly on the surface of the growing medium. |
