Nuttall’s larkspur has been turned to sparingly in the Great Basin and adjacent regions for external protection. Among the Northern Paiute of western Nevada, leaves and stems were crushed into a wet mash and laid on minor cuts, bruises and wasp or bee stings as a counterirritant “wash” (Nadig, 1999). The Klamath and Modoc of southern Oregon and northern California applied a decoction of the whole herb topically as a liniment for rheumatic aches and as a wash to treat skin eruptions, relying on the plant’s known acridity to “draw” irritation outward (Murphey, 1959). The Takelma of southwest Oregon steeped fresh aerial parts in hot water to make a strong infusion used as a surface antiseptic rinse on fresh wounds, where sensitivity to the plant’s irritant compounds constrained use to brief contact (Merriam, 1914). Throughout these regions the caution was explicit: the herb was never ingested in quantity and the preparation was kept for external use only.
For a standardized wash (1:20 w/v, “liniment-strength”), steep 30 g of fresh leaves and stems in 600 mL of just-boiled water for 15–20 minutes, then cool and strain; apply with clean cloth to unbroken skin for not more than 5–10 minutes, rinse with clear water and discontinue if burning or rash develops. Internal use is strongly discouraged; pregnant or nursing people should avoid any contact, and the wash must be kept away from eyes and mucous membranes (Nadig, 1999; Merriam, 1914).
The external astringency and topical irritation associated with Delphinium nuttallianum are most plausibly explained by the high concentration of diterpenoid alkaloids such as delphinine, delsonine, 14-deacetylisodelphinine and their methyllycaconitine-type congeners present in aerial tissues (Gardner, 1903; St. John & Jones, 1931). These bases act as sodium-channel neurotoxins at the skin level, giving the characteristic tingling and counterirritant effect that informants described in external washes and compresses.
In the present day, Nuttall’s larkspur is still occasionally cited in western herbal compendia for historical external uses but remains largely a toxicological reference point rather than a mainstream ingredient (Moerman, 1998; Nadig, 1999).
