Ethnobotanical Uses
In traditional Chinese practice Eriocaulon buergerianum is collected for infusions and decoctions of the aerial parts used as a mild, bitter-tasting “heat-clearing” tea, especially for fever, cough, and inflammatory throat conditions in children and adults, according to the Chinese Materia Medica (Editorial Committee of the Chinese Materia Medica, 1999). Across the Ryukyu islands of Japan, island healers have prepared infusions of the whole plant to ease cough and reduce “heat” in feverish patients, as recorded ethnobotanically by Akiyama in 1988. In traditional Vietnamese home medicine, children’s cough and throat discomfort have been soothed with a brief decoction of the aerial parts, a practice noted by Dao in 1994 and in herbal monographs compiled by Van and Le in 2004.
One practical, time-honored preparation is a simple “mild tea” that can be made by simmering 5–8 g of dried aerial parts in 500 ml of water for 5–10 minutes, then cooling and straining. This dose is taken warm in small sips, typically once or twice daily, and continued for a few days until symptoms lessen. Folk sources differ in strength; some recipes use only 3–5 g for a gentler daily tea (Akiyama, 1988). In all cases, it is regarded as a mild remedy suitable for children, but used conservatively in adults; no dosing advice exceeds one or two cups per day. It should not be taken during pregnancy, and anyone with a known allergy to Asteraceae plants should avoid it.
Well-established phytochemicals for this species include flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol glycosides, together with phenolic acids including chlorogenic acid, and a distinctive mixture of acetylenic fatty acids in the seeds. The prevalence of flavonoids and phenolic acids explains the bitter, astringent taste and the tea’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant profiles, which fit the traditional uses for easing feverish coughs and sore throats (Wang et al., 2013; Zhang et al., 2018).
Today, modern studies point to anti-inflammatory and antiviral activity relevant to respiratory complaints, while dried aerial parts for tea remain available in Chinese herbal shops and online channels as “狗舌草.” The gentle nature of the infusion continues to support household use, and ongoing work on its flavonoid profile suggests a role in complementary care.
