General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Scientific/model-organism use:
Populus angustifolia is included in the U.S. DOE JGI Genome Portal as a Salicaceae model species. Its reference genome, curated transcriptomes, genetic and genomic tools, and community resources underpin research in tree biology, wood formation, and adaptive genomics, and support comparative studies across the genus. Small branch cuttings root readily in the greenhouse, facilitating standardized phenotyping and functional assays.
Wood and fiber:
P. angustifolia yields a light, low-density wood suitable for pulp chips, crating, pallets, and rough lumber. It is frequently harvested in the Intermountain West as small-diameter logs and chips for pulping and is occasionally used for temporary construction or low-value lumber products. As with other cottonwoods, properties and processing must be managed for low bending strength and high shrinkage relative to commercial conifers.
Properties relevant to use:
The species has a specific gravity of approximately 0.41 and volumetric shrinkage from green to oven-dry of about 11.1–12.3%, with tangential shrinkage around 6.2% and radial shrinkage about 3.5% (Spir et al., 1981). Its wood is relatively soft with low decay resistance, typically light-colored to pale brown, and free of pronounced resin, properties consistent with fiber/pulping uses and light structural applications where strength demands are modest.
Standards and regulation:
Plywood and structural wood products made from P. angustifolia are graded under U.S. product standards such as PS 1 and PS 2. Raw logs and lumber are subject to national phytosanitary and trade rules; pallet lumber is subject to ISPM 15 for international movement. Pulp chips conform to regional mill specifications (moisture, size distribution), which govern acceptable species and form.
Sustainability and sourcing:
P. angustifolia regenerates naturally along riparian corridors and responds to disturbance, supporting local harvesting of pulp chips and small logs in western North America. Its use in research and pulp contributes to the broader sustainability of poplar-based systems, including bioenergy and fiber crops.
