Populus angustifolia, also known as narrowleaf cottonwood, is a tree species found in western North America, particularly in the Rocky Mountains and surrounding plains. It can be found in Canada and Mexico as well. This tree grows near streams and creeks at elevations between 3,900 to 7,900 feet. It has a slim profile and produces yellow-green leaves with scalloped edges, catkins in the spring, and fluffy white fruiting capsules. It can hybridize with other Populus species and is often used as a host by the sugarbeet root aphid. Native American tribes also used its sticky buds as chewing gum.
