Platonia insignis is a unique tree species belonging to the Clusiaceae family, found in the humid forests of South America. It is commonly known as bacuri and has various other names in different regions. There was some confusion regarding its scientific name, but it has been established that it is Platonia insignis. This tree is closely related to Montrouziera from New Caledonia. It is a deciduous tree with a pyramidal crown and glossy dark green leaves. The flowers are pink and the fruit is round with a thick yellow skin. The fruit is used to make condiments and beverages and is known for its high nutritional value. The seeds are used as a home remedy for skin conditions. The tree's wood is also used for timber. The bacuri oil extracted from the fruit has a high absorption rate and is used as an emollient and moisturizing agent due to its high fatty acid content. Platonia is also a natural source of trioxygenated xanthones and contains resinotol in its latex.
