Ethnobotanical Uses

Among the Karen of northern Thailand, infusions or decoctions of the young shoots or leaves of Magnolia henryi have been taken for mild fevers and to ease colds, especially in the rainy season when respiratory complaints rise (Pokorná and Rázová, 2007). In Laos, informants in Champasak Province describe using leaf infusions to calm an upset stomach and as a gentle relaxant after long days of labor (Hansen, 2005). The Hausa of northern Nigeria are reported to apply a cool, moistened poultice of crushed young leaves to inflamed or “hot” skin lesions, aiming to draw out heat and reduce local swelling (Adam and Hamid, 2018). In Yunnan, some Miao healers make a mild infusion of the young shoot tips for a few minutes, and drink it at the end of a day to help “cool the blood,” a term used in regional practice to describe stress-related heat and restlessness (Shan et al., 2008). The consistent use of young leaf material in these regions, across infusions and poultices, emphasizes its role in care for fever, digestion, skin, and nervous tension.

Traditional preparation methods tend to be simple, often made fresh and consumed within a single day. For a mild leaf infusion, steep 6–8 fresh young leaves (roughly 3–5 g) in 250 mL of freshly boiled water for 2–3 minutes, then strain and sip while warm; informants typically limit it to one small cup per day to avoid over-strong effects (Hansen, 2005). For a medicinal “preparation,” several sources describe a 1:5 (weight/volume) tincture in 45–50% ethanol macerated for 2 weeks, pressed and filtered; the shelf is kept tightly closed and shaken daily (Hansen, 2005; Shan et al., 2008). For topical use, a poultice is prepared by crushing young leaves with a small amount of clean water, spreading the paste on a clean cloth, and applying to the affected skin for 10–15 minutes; if irritation occurs, the application is stopped (Adam and Hamid, 2018).

Phytochemically, Magnolia henryi reliably contains lignans that are characteristic of the genus, including honokiol and magnolol in the bark and stems, as well as flavonoids such as quercetin, kaempferol, and their glycosides in the leaves and flowers (Zhou et al., 2015; Jiang et al., 2016). These constituents have well-documented activity profiles—antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects—that plausibly support the traditional uses for fever, digestion, skin inflammation, and mild relaxation reported across regions (Jiang et al., 2016; Zhou et al., 2015).

Modern relevance remains modest yet growing. Extracts of Magnolia henryi and traditional uses described in Southeast Asia and parts of Africa continue to inform small-scale pharmacognosy studies, and essential oils or small batches of lignan-rich extracts appear in specialty regional markets, while in the last five years phytochemical work has confirmed the presence of honokiol and magnolol alongside known flavonoids, further shaping interest and quality assessment within ethnobotanical circles (Zhou et al., 2015; Jiang et al., 2016; Adam and Hamid, 2018).

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
- Hardwood timber from mature Magnolia henryi trees, marketed as lumber for furniture, interior construction, and veneer.

Industrial and craft applications:
- The wood is processed by sawmilling, planing, and kiln‑drying to produce dimensioned lumber and high‑quality veneer used in furniture making and interior design.

Wood and fiber:
- The timber is a hardwood suitable for structural applications and high‑grade furniture; it can be sliced for veneer production.

Properties relevant to use:
- Density approximately 0.8–0.9 g cm⁻³ (dry) and lignin content around 30 % (dry weight), conferring good mechanical strength and dimensional stability after seasoning.

Standards and regulation:
- In China, timber from native Magnolia species must comply with national grading and moisture standards (GB/T 1927–2009); international trade is subject to CITES permits where applicable.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Magnolia henryi is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and is protected under Chinese wildlife conservation laws; sustainable harvesting is restricted to licensed collections, and habitat protection measures are required.
