Fritillaria pallidiflora, a perennial lily endemic to the alpine meadows of the Tianshan and Altai ranges, has been recorded as a respiratory remedy among the Kazakh, Uyghur and Mongolian peoples of Asia. Among the Kazakh herders of Xinjiang, the dried bulb is boiled in water to make a decoction used to relieve chronic cough and asthma (Wang et al., 2018). Uyghur practitioners in the same region prepare a milder tea of the sliced bulb, taken after meals to soothe bronchial irritation (Zhang et al., 2021). In Mongolia, nomadic healers grind the dried bulb into a coarse powder, steep it for ten minutes in hot water, and drink the infusion as a daily tonic for phlegm‑cough (Natsag & Enkhtsetseg, 2020). Tibetan physicians on the Qinghai‑Tibet plateau also employ a macerated tincture of the bulb in alcohol for acute bronchitis, believing the alkaloid‑rich preparation to have expectorant properties (Lhamo & Pelz, 2019). All traditions specify the bulb as the plant part used.
A simple, low‑dose tea can be prepared from dried Fritillaria pallidiflora bulbs for mild cough. Weigh out 3 g of sliced bulb, place it in a saucepan with 200 ml of water, bring to a gentle boil, and simmer for 15 minutes. Turn off the heat, let the mixture steep for an additional 10 minutes, then strain. The resulting liquid is taken warm, 100 ml twice daily, preferably after meals. Because the plant contains steroidal alkaloids such as peimine and peimisine, which can irritate the gastrointestinal tract, the preparation should not exceed the suggested dose and should be avoided by pregnant or nursing women and by children under twelve (Bennett et al., 2021).
The therapeutic effects of these traditional preparations are linked to the well‑documented phytochemistry of Fritillaria pallidiflora. The dried bulbs consistently contain high levels of peimine (also called imperialine), peimisine, isoimperialine and related steroidal alkaloids, together with minor flavonoids and saponins (Li & Chen, 2022). These alkaloids have shown antitussive and bronchodilatory activity in vitro, providing a plausible chemical basis for the cough‑relieving uses recorded across the cultures above.
Modern research is confirming many of these historical applications. Recent pharmacological studies have demonstrated that extracts rich in peimine can reduce airway inflammation in rodent models, and a few commercial manufacturers now supply standardized Fritillaria pallidiflora extracts for herbal‑medicine formulations in China and Mongolia (Zhang et al., 2021). Nevertheless, the species remains chiefly collected from wild populations, and sustainable cultivation projects are underway in Xinjiang to meet growing demand while preserving alpine habitats.
