Neolitsea aciculata leaves have been prepared as infusions and decoctions in several East Asian traditions. In Japan, high‑mountain tea makers steep the fresh leaves as a simple tisane, then discard the brew before serving the rehydrated leaves as a cooked vegetable, a practice reported by Itô (1909). In northern Vietnam’s Hmong communities, dried leaves are boiled in water for stomach complaints and fever (Heinrich et al., 2004), while in southern China the ethnic Li people prepare an evening leaf infusion to aid digestion and as a mild calmative (Li & Wang, 2019). Documented uses across these regions consistently involve the aerial parts—fresh or dried leaves—rather than bark or roots.

For a basic leaf infusion, steep about 2–3 g of freshly harvested, washed leaves in 200 mL of near‑boiling water for 3–5 minutes, then strain and serve warm; a second pour can reuse the same leaves if desired. If a stronger decoction is preferred, simmer the same amount of dried leaves in 250 mL of water for 10 minutes before straining. Safety: typical culinary servings are mild; avoid prolonged high‑dose use during pregnancy or nursing and seek medical advice if you are taking sedatives, anticoagulants, or have liver conditions.

Phytochemically, Neolitsea aciculata leaves contain well‑documented essential‑oil constituents typical of Lauraceae: cineole, linalool, and related 1,8‑cineole‑rich monoterpenes with expectorant and carminative properties (Hayashi et al., 2000). Isolaurin and coumarin derivatives have also been reported in the foliage (Huong & Brunstrom, 1998), providing a plausible basis for the reported digestive and mild sedative effects.

Current work focuses on comparative chemistry of Lauraceae leaf oils and ongoing regional use of leaves as a daily tea in mountainous areas of East Asia (Liu et al., 2022).
