Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata, also known as wild olive or African olive, is a subspecies of the olive tree. It was previously considered a separate species and is still referred to as such in some sources. Native to northeast Africa and subtropical Asia, it is the ancestor of the cultivated olive and has been introduced to Australia, New Zealand, and the US. However, it is considered an aggressive invasive species that can overtake dry woodland areas and other habitats. The tree can reach heights of 2 to 15 meters and has glossy, grey-green leaves with a distinct pointed tip. In spring, small, inconspicuous flowers appear, followed by edible but bitter fruit. It is widely distributed throughout Africa, western Asia, and the Indian subcontinent, and is also found in Australia where it is considered an environmental weed. The wood of this tree is highly valued for its durability and is used for furniture and other purposes. It is also cultivated for ornamental purposes and for the production of table olives and oil. The sap of its fruit can even be used to make ink.
