Essential oil (hydrodistilled from leaves/flowering tops) is the primary commercial product. Typical yields are 1.2–2.0 % w/w of fresh plant material, producing a yellow oil with a strong oregano aroma (Duran et al., 2004). The oil is supplied to flavor houses for use in spice blends and functional food ingredients.
Industrial and craft applications:
The hybrid is a model organism in phylogenetic and hybridisation studies of Origanum (Kılıç et al., 2012; Baser & Duman, 1997). Its defined morphology and known ploidy make it useful for breeding programmes that combine high‑carvacrol chemotypes from O. onites with disease‑resistance traits from O. vulgare (Kılıç et al., 2012).
Food and beverages (non‑medicinal):
The oil, rich in carvacrol, is employed as a natural flavouring and preservative in processed meat, dairy and bakery products; antimicrobial tests show inhibition of Listeria and Salmonella at 0.2–0.5 % (v/w) (Ozcelik et al., 2006). Its use is permitted under EU Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008 on flavourings.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
The oil’s high carvacrol content provides a spicy aroma valued in soaps, shampoos, detergents and fine‑fragrance blends, typically at 0.05–0.5 % in leave‑on cosmetics and up to 1 % in rinse‑off products (IFRA, 2020). IFRA guidelines indicate compatibility with citrus and herbaceous fragrance notes.
Properties relevant to use:
GC‑MS analysis shows ~70 % carvacrol, 7–9 % p‑cymene, 5–6 % γ‑terpinene (Duran et al., 2004). These phenolics give antimicrobial activity and antioxidant capacity (DPPH IC₅₀ ≈ 0.8 mg mL⁻¹) and a volatile profile suitable for diffusion.
