Origanum laevigatum is cultivated as an ornamental and occasionally harvested for its aromatic essential oil. The oil, obtained by hydrodistillation of aerial parts, is composed predominantly of phenolic monoterpenes—carvacrol and thymol—characteristic of fragrance terpene profiles.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
Essential oil from the species has been analyzed and described as having a strong, spicy-herbaceous odor. Due to its carvacrol-rich composition, the oil is a candidate source of natural aroma and flavoring constituents within the oregano aroma family; commercial use is genus-level rather than species-specific.
Properties relevant to use:
Key chemical features are the high proportions of carvacrol and thymol (often >50% total), together with p-cymene, γ-terpinene, and related monoterpenes. These phenolics and terpenes confer strong aromatic impact and radical-scavenging activity relevant to fragrance applications.
