Ajuga taiwanensis is most often prepared as a gentle decoction of the aerial parts—leaves and stems—to help with sore throats and other inflammatory complaints. Among Hokkien-speaking communities on the island, herbal practitioners commonly simmer a small handful of fresh aerial parts in water for fifteen minutes and sip the warm tea (Lin, 2015, Chinese Herbal Remedies of Taiwan). In Hakka villages in northern Taiwan, similar decoctions are taken for throat irritation and to reduce swelling, while practitioners in southern Taiwan sometimes combine the dried aerial parts with other herbs and steep them as a light tea for fevers (Chan and Hsieh, 2016, Materia Medica of Southern Taiwan). In southern China’s coastal provinces, herbal pharmacies list Ajuga taiwanensis as a source herb for the “Ajuga leaf tea” category, alongside related Ajuga species, recommending a brief decoction for sore throat and phlegm (State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2015, Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China).

For a mild throat tea, measure approximately 8–10 grams of fresh aerial parts or 3–5 grams of dried leaves and stems. Simmer the material in 500 milliliters of water for fifteen minutes, then strain. One cup may be taken two to three times per day, with no long-term daily use advised unless supervised by a practitioner (Lin, 2015; State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2015). Traditional use is generally confined to short-term relief of mild throat discomfort; avoid use during pregnancy and in young children, and stop if rash or stomach upset develops. Those taking blood thinners or other medications should consult a clinician, as rutin and related flavonoids can influence platelet function (Lin, 2015; State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2015).

The plant’s activity is plausibly explained by well-known constituents isolated from the species. Work from Chinese research groups has identified iridoid glycosides such as harpagide and harpagoside, flavonoids including luteolin-7-glucoside and rutin, terpenoids like ursolic acid and ajugacumbin A diterpenes, as well as caffeic acid derivatives (Lin and Teng, 1990, Journal of Natural Products; Cheng et al., 1999, Journal of Chinese Chemical Society). These compounds are widely studied for anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, which align with throat-tea use.

Commercial “Ajuga leaf” teas and dried aerial parts are still stocked by specialty herbal shops in Taiwan and southern China for occasional sore throat support, and laboratory studies on extracts from Ajuga taiwanensis continue to examine anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties (Chen and Wang, 2022, Phytochemistry Letters).

The leaves and stems contain essential oils characterized by sesquiterpenes (e.g., α-humulene, germacrene D). These volatile constituents are utilized in perfumery and as fragrance components in cosmetic formulations, contributing fresh, herbal, or woody scent profiles.

Colorants and tanning:
Tannins, particularly hydrolyzable gallotannins, are present in the plant tissue. These compounds enable natural brown dyeing of protein fibers (silk, wool) and serve as tanning agents for leather processing.

Scientific and model uses:
Ajuga taiwanensis is employed in phytochemical and chemotaxonomic studies focusing on iridoid glycoside biosynthesis and sesquiterpene evolution. It serves as a reference taxon for investigating mint family (Lamiaceae) phylogenetics and metabolite profiling.

Properties relevant to use:
