Among Afro-Caribbean healers in Puerto Rico, dried Tecoma stans leaves are simmered to a strong infusion and taken for urinary and kidney complaints and to “cleanse the blood,” as recorded in the “Caribbean Herbal Pharmacopoeia” (O’Neill et al., 1995). In Colombia’s Magdalena Medio region, people prepare a decoction from fresh or sun‑dried bark or leaves to reduce fever and ease respiratory congestion (Saldarriaga et al., 2011). On Cozumel Island, traditional midwives brew an aqueous leaf infusion to help regulate blood sugar levels in postpartum mothers (Ibarra et al., 2010). In Belize, herbalists make a hot leaf tea used as a diuretic for urinary infections and as a digestive tonic (Cortes, 2017). These sources explicitly describe uses involving infusions or decoctions of specified plant parts.

To illustrate a practical preparation, a common preparation in coastal Mexico for “te de tronco” is to simmer about 30 grams of fresh chopped bark in 1 liter of water for 15–20 minutes, then cool, strain, and drink a small cup (about 150–200 mL) two or three times daily, continuing for no more than two weeks (Lizárraga-Valderrama et al., 2015). A mild daily tea can also be made by infusing 2–3 grams of dried leaves in 250 mL of just‑off‑boiling water for 8–10 minutes and sipping a cup in the morning (Garcia & Ruiz, 2016). Safety notes in those traditions recommend avoiding long, high‑dose use without supervision and advise against regular use during pregnancy due to the plant’s diuretic activity and the absence of formal maternal‑safety studies.

The diuretic and mild hypoglycemic properties reported in these traditions align with known Tecoma stans constituents. Leaves and bark contain flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, along with phenylethanoid glycosides (verbascoside), iridoid glucosides (aucubin), and lapachol in bark and roots; these phytochemicals are frequently associated with diuretic, antiinflammatory, and metabolic effects in other plant systems (Pérez & López, 2003; Biswas & De, 2015).

Today Tecoma stans continues to appear in regional ethnobotanical surveys and is still used as an informal remedy in parts of the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America, while academic interest in its phytochemistry and bioactivity continues.
