Gentiana crassicaulis is a bitter root used across East Asia, Latin America, and the Himalayas as a warming, anti‑inflammatory tea and decoction. In northern China the roots are decocted to relieve rheumatic pain, headaches, and muscle aches (Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica). The plant is also listed in the Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China as “Qinjiao,” typically prescribed in decoctions at 6–15 g for joint stiffness and the “damp‑heat bi” syndrome of Chinese medicine (Chinese Pharmacopoeia, 2020). Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, a 19th‑century ethnobotanical survey records bitter infusions made from closely related Gentiana species for fever reduction and digestive discomfort (Latcham, 1924). In Bhutan, folk healers use a decoction of G. crassicaulis roots for gastrointestinal upset and as a tonic, referring to it by local names for gentian (Gyeltshen et al., 2017).
A practical, time‑tested preparation is a “Qinjiao decoction”: combine 9–12 g of dried root slices with 600 mL of water, bring to a boil, then simmer for 30–40 minutes; strain and drink while warm. This method is the standard therapeutic approach in traditional Chinese practice (Bensky & Gamble, 1993; Chinese Pharmacopoeia, 2020). The tea is notably bitter, and gentian roots are generally taken for short periods; long‑term use is not recommended, and safety in pregnancy is not established. For an alcohol tincture, a 1:5 (herb:solvent, w:v) maceration in 45% ethanol for 4–6 weeks produces a standardized preparation for topical compresses; do not exceed recommended oral doses and avoid use in pregnancy.
Active constituents reported for G. crassicaulis include the iridoid gentiopicroside and its precursors loganic acid and loganin, as well as secoiridoids such as swertiamarin and the very bitter amarogentin (Tian et al., 2008). These compounds plausibly underlie the bitter, digestive‑stimulating, and anti‑inflammatory actions described in the ethnobotanical records (Tian et al., 2008).
Modern relevance: G. crassicaulis remains available as the pharmacopoeial herb “Qinjiao” and is used both clinically and in regional folk practice; recent phytochemical work continues to profile its iridoids, supporting ongoing interest in its bitter and anti‑inflammatory properties (Tian et al., 2008; Chinese Pharmacopoeia, 2020).
