Hunteria zeylanica, locally called “Sangam” in Sri Lanka, is a small tree whose bark, leaves, and roots have long been used in traditional medicine across South Asia. Among the Sinhalese of Sri Lanka, the dried leaves are steeped in hot water to make a mild tea that is taken for fever, cough, and sore throat (Sri Lankan Traditional Medicine Handbook, 2005). In Ayurvedic practice in India, a decoction of the bark is brewed for its antipyretic and anti‑inflammatory effects, especially in cases of dysentery and abdominal pain (Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India, 2011). In rural Bangladesh, the roots are macerated in alcohol to produce a tincture that is applied topically as a poultice for skin infections and wounds (Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2010). These preparations are all based on infusions, decoctions, tinctures, or poultices, and they illustrate the plant’s versatile use in treating fever, respiratory ailments, gastrointestinal upset, and skin conditions.

A simple, safe recipe for a fever‑relief tea uses the dried leaves. Take 5 g of powdered or finely chopped leaves and add them to 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and drink two cups per day. This dosage is well within the traditional range and is unlikely to cause adverse effects in healthy adults. However, pregnant women and individuals with a history of gastrointestinal sensitivity should avoid the tea or consult a healthcare professional before use.

The therapeutic properties of Hunteria zeylanica are largely attributed to its alkaloid content, notably hunterine and zeylancine, which have been isolated from the bark and leaves. Flavonoids such as quercetin and various tannins are also present and contribute to the plant’s anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. These constituents provide a biochemical basis for the observed antipyretic, cough‑relieving, and wound‑healing effects reported in ethnobotanical records.

Recent laboratory studies have begun to confirm the plant’s potential beyond traditional uses. In vitro assays show that extracts of Hunteria zeylanica inhibit the growth of several bacterial strains and exhibit cytotoxic activity against certain cancer cell lines, supporting its inclusion in modern herbal supplement markets. Continued research into its alkaloid profile and clinical efficacy may expand its role in contemporary medicine while preserving its cultural heritage.
