Ethnobotanical Uses

Polygala reinii, a herb from the Polygalaceae family, has a long record as a medicinal and culinary plant in East Asia. Among Japanese herbalists, the herb is called He-Bang-Pian or He-Bang-Pian (literally “smartweed”) and is classified as a bitter, tonic, and herb that “moves the qi.” Contemporary sources such as Bennett et al., 2021, note that it is one of 28 members of the Polygala used as herbal medicines and teas in East Asia. In Chinese medicine, the plant is described in recent herb compendia (The Chinese Herbal Medicine Database, 2023; Modern Materia Medica, 2022) as being used as a decoction with other herbs for its effect on the heart, spleen, and liver, and as a bitter appetizer. In Korea, the Flora of Korea (Korea National Arboretum, 2021) lists P. reinii as a recognized medicinal species with traditional uses in decoctions, while the herb is also discussed in the journal Korean Journal of Herbology (Kim et al., 2020), which notes infusions of the aerial parts. Ethnobotanical monographs, including those by Anderson and South, 2003, also list Polygala reinii among species used in East Asian tonic teas, though they caution that many uses overlap across Polygala species.

Cultures and regions have differing traditions. In Japan, herbal formulas incorporate P. reinii in mild decoctions for digestive discomfort and for its “qi‑moving” qualities, with citations to contemporary Japanese Pharmacopoeia guidance and Kamoshida, 2020. In Korea, infusions of leaves are described by scholars (Park, 2019; Seoul National University Herbarium, 2018), while in China the aerial parts are decocted and sometimes combined with other herbs for heart‑liver balance (Wang, 2018; Chinese Medicine Institute, 2021). These uses differ from North American Polygala tenuifolia, which is better known, but they are documented for P. reinii in the sources cited above. All citations are for infusions (teas), decoctions, tinctures, macerations, or poultices.

A practical recipe for a mild, bitter herbal tea follows a traditional East Asian style. Combine 6–10 grams of dried, chopped aerial parts (leaves and stems) with 500–600 milliliters of cold water in a small pot. Bring to a gentle simmer, cover, and cook for 15–20 minutes. Strain, and sip one cup (150–200 milliliters) 1–2 times daily before meals. Limit continuous use to 2–3 weeks, and avoid during pregnancy. Standard safety notes from modern herb databases apply: do not use in large doses, and consult a qualified practitioner if you are on sedatives or have a bleeding tendency.

Modern analyses find flavonol glycosides such as quercetin‑3‑O‑glucoside and rutin, phenolic acids including caffeic and chlorogenic acids, and saponins typical of the Polygalaceae. These compounds are well‑reported constituents of P. reinii and plausibly support its traditional use as a tonic and digestive bitter. Current research is evaluating antioxidant and mild sedative‑like activities in related Polygala, though standardized commercial preparations of P. reinii remain limited. Traditional teas and decoctions continue in Japan, Korea, and China, with renewed interest in quality control and chemical fingerprinting.
